Jennylyn Mercado's Movie Trounces Kris Aquino's Entry At The Metro Filmfest Box Office After It Won Awards

WE WISH our readers a happy, peaceful New Year 2016 full of wonderful blessings from the Lord.

AS EXPECTED, the awards won by “Walang Forever”, including best picture, bet actor for Jericho Rosales and best actress for Jennylyn Mercado) helped in attracting more viewers and it’s now number 4 in its standing in the box office. The Metro-Manila Filmfest Facebook page revealed this. Number one remains to be “My Bebe Love”, followed by “Beauty and the Bestie”, then the horror flick from Regal, “Haunted Mansion”.

No official figures were given, just this ranking. Kris Aquino’s entry, “All You Need is Pag-ibig” is now number 5. It wa surely affected by Kris’ being urong-sulong in doing it and it ended up being a quickie rushed by Director Antoinette Jadaone. This is a big blow for Kris, whose past movies used to be number 2 always, like “Dalaw”, “Segunda Mano” and “Feng Shui 2”.

It’s said the first five days of the festival has already raked in a total of P547 million. So the MIFF is optimistic that they will reach their target of P1 billion revenue for the whole festival run.

Yearender Part One - The People And Events That Stood Out In 2015

THE YEAR is about to end so let’s take one last glimpse at the people and events that stood out in 2015. ALDUB - It all started in July when Alden Richards was a guest in “Eat Bulaga” and Yaya Dub/Maine Mendoza became so conscious when he waved at her. The spontaneous Pabebe wave became a phenomenon and the Kalyeserye quickly ruled the airlanes. Alden and Maine became so popular that they were able to fill up the Philippine Arena, became a global phenomenon and trended on Twitter worldwide, got a total of 15 new endorsements (and still counting) and their first movie together, “My Bebe Love”, is currently the topgrosser at the ongoing Metro Manila Filmfest, with Maine winning the best supporting actress at that.

‘HENERAL LUNA’ - A historical movie with no big name stars predicted to flop turned out to be one of the year’s biggest box office hits, thanks to personal word of mouth endorsement by satisfied viewers who used to shun period and costume flicks. Gen. Antonio Luna is a vital figure in the Phil-American War and this movie finally gives him the importance that he deserves. It opened viewers' eyes with its question: “Bayan o sarili?” This is so significant at this time when our current political leaders think only of themselves and continue with their grandstanding.

PIA WURTZBACH - Pia’s winning the ended the 42-year drought in the MIss Universe Pageant. But it was a controversial win after host Steve Harvey made a mistake in declaring Miss Colombia as the winner, then corrected it on the air. And the controversy didn’t end there but continued on social media with so many people joining the fray.

What else happened in 2015? The visit of Pope Francis, a very popular pope, in January, that was quickly followed by the Mamasapano massacre of 44 Special Action Force PNP cops in Maguindanao. The tragic death of Lumad leaders in the hands of greedy land grabbers. China’s invasion of the West Philippine that no one can seem to stop.

The APEC summit that closed down major arteries and caused monstrous traffic jams, but now only remembered for the so called APEC hotties (Pena and Trudeau). The Tanim-Bala incidents perpetrated by greedy security personnel at the NAIA on unsuspecting passengers. OFW’s raising a howl when the Bureau of Customs threatened to open their balikbayan boxes of pasalubongs to tax them.

The horrible traffic situation got even more horrifying. Manila is just so over congested, choking with people and vehicles, and we don’t have the infrastructure of overhead highways that help other cities abroad ease their lives. Karen Davila’s revealing interview with senatorial candidate Alma Moreno was the toast of social media for weeks.

Abroad, an act of infamy is the violent Paris terrorist attacks perpetrated by the Islamic State killing 130 people. Then there’s Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner transitioning into a woman to become Caitlin Jenner.
What started in 2015 that is sure to spill over to 2016 is the current political circus: Grace Poe being disqualified. Jojo Binay and his mayor son being besieged by charges of corruption, but the VP has also come up with the most outrageous but nevertheless effective political ads. Rodrigo Duterte playing hard to get, threatening to kill petty criminals (not big time political crooks), boasting about his being a womanizer, and threatening to slap Mar Roxas who stooped down to his level and succeeded in remaining in his No. 4 post.

NEXT: THE UPS AND DOWNS IN THE LOVE AFFAIRS OF OUR STARS IN 2015.

GMA Network Bids 2015 With A Grand Countdown At MOA And Presents Line Up Of New Programs To Be Shown In 2016

THE LONG RUNNING afternoon hit soap, “The Half Sisters” will finally end in two weeks after being in the air for a year and a half. But the fans of its lead stars, Barbie Forteza and Andre Paras, need not worry because they have a follow up project right away. They will topbill the new show entitled “That’s My Amboy” starting January 25.

The fact that the Barbie-Andre love team clicks so well with their followers on TV is the main reason why the love team that Viva is cooking up for Andre and Yassi Pressman on the big screen will not prosper. Otherwise, their first team up in “Wang Fam” would have been a success. As it is, it’s common knowledge that the movie didn’t do well at the tills.

GMA-7 has really prepared a great lineup of new shows for the first two months of the coming new year 2016. Their first salvo is the comeback of the Miguel Tanfelix-Bianca Umali teen love team on January 18 in the much awaited “Wish I May” (with Alden Richards’ hit love songs as its theme). Then, on February 8, another teen love team will topbill another new show, “The Abandoned”, starring Derrick Monasterio and Bea Binene. Eugene Domingo will have a new show to host, “Dear Uge”, starting on Valentine’s Day. And on February 27, Michael V and Iya Villania will be hosting the new dubsmash contest, “Lip Sync Battle”.

Tonight, don’t miss their grand countdown for the new year, “GMA Countdown to 2016”, hosted by Alden Richards, Kris Bernal and Betong Sumaya at the Seaside Blvd. of the Mall of Asia. The guest performers include Mark Herras, Rocco Nacino, Sef Cadayona, Julian Trono, Wynwyn Marquez, Mayton Eugenio, Gerphil Flores, StarStruck Top 6 and the teen loveteams of Ruru Madrid- Gabbi Garcia and Miguel Tanfelix-Bianca Umali. There will be a big fireworks display to greet 2016 and a contest for those who’ll wear the best costume.

If You See A Child Sitting Like This, Better Stop Them Immediately! The Reason? Shocking!

Children likes to sit down everywhere they go. Most of the time they do not care how and where they are sitting as long as it provides comfort for them.

One of the most common positions that the kids like to sit into is the 'W' position. Whereas the legs and feet are forming a W shape.

Not many know, but this kind of position might bring harm to the body of the children, despite the balance and comfort that it brings.

It gives an unusual amount of stress on the hips and the knees of the child, which makes it harmful to them. This position also decreases the ability of the body of the child to be able to rotate their body.

The position also puts the spine of the child in danger since it is in the curved angle when a child does the 'W' position.

Experts claim that there are other alternative positions that can be taught to the children to avoid these damages.

Point Break Review: Great Action Scenes But Bland Lead Actors

‘POINT BREAK’ opened in the U.S. only on Christmas Day but it was released here 3 weeks ago and it was hardly noticed by local moviegoers as it was not at all promoted. Too bad because it turned out to be very entertaining and it could have been as big a hit as the similarly themed “Fast and Furious” series. It’s actually a remake of a 1991 movie with a cult following starring Keanu Reeves and the late Patrick Swayze, directed by a female director, Kathryn Bigelow, who’d later win the Oscar for “The Hurt Locker”.

The new version is directed by Ericson Core and it’s another tribute to machismo loaded with awesome spectacular action sequences. The original movie was set only on Los Angeles but the new one is a globe-trotting piece of cinema showing its main characters doing daredevil, death-defying stunts in various exotic locations.

The story is basically the same. Johnny Utah (then Keanu, now Luke Bracey), an extreme athlete, joins the FBI after his best friend died in an accident. He is made to infiltrate the gang of Bodhi (Swayze then, Edgar Ramirez now) who seems to be doing a series of high risk challenges known as the Ozaki Eight that aim to honor the forces of Nature. Their aim in doing various heists is not for their own material enrichment (they give the loot to the poor in Mumbai and Mexico) but for spiritual enlightenment.

Fans of extreme sports will no doubt love the movie, with all the dangerous scenes involving big-wave surfing, skydiving, snowboarding, motorbiking and rock climbing all executed convincingly with utmost precision. Real extreme athletes are featured here, like Bob Burnquist, Laird Hamilton, Ian Walsh, etc. They perform death-defying stunts that are shot in such breathtaking locations like the Cave of Swallows in Mexico, the coast of Biarritz in France and the beautiful Angel Falls in Venezuela. These scenes alone are already worth the price of admission.

But the remake’s biggest problem is they got lackluster actors who simply do not have the dynamism of Keanu and Swayze, whose characters’ seeming bromance made the original more intriguing. Aussie actor Luke Bracey was introduced as the young James Marsden in Nicholas Spark’s “The Best of Me”. He looks too old for that role and he also looks too old (and bland) as Johnny Utah here.

Edgar Ramirez is also wanting as Bodhi. Both of them are heavily tattooed, but you won’t believe that Utah will have any respect for him and he’s not at all believable as someone who’s on a quest for spiritual enlightenment. Simply put, both Bracey and Ramirez just lack the strong charisma and magnetic screen presence of Keanu and Swayze who were also more successful in making their movie work.

Bracey is given a love interest (Teresa Palmer) and there’s a twist that happens to her later. It’s meant to shock viewers but the problem is they failed to make us invest in their flimsy romantic relationship. But still, the adrenalin-charged action scenes ala-ESPN are enough reasons for thrill-seeking audiences to watch it.

Kris Bernal Delivers Her Best Performance As The Mentally Challenged Tinay In 'Little Nanay'

KRIS BERNAL is ecstatic over the good feedback she is getting for her persuasive portrayal of Tinay, an intellectually challenged young woman fighting for her own place in the sun in “Little Nanay”. Regular viewers are now even imitating her in saying her favorite expression: “Happy lang.” If you don’t really know her, you’d think she’s really mentally disabled as she looks so natural in her interpretation of the role.

“Naku, laking pasasalamat ko talaga na sa akin napunta ang role na ito,” says Kris. “It’s really so different from any role that I’ve played before. Mai-inspire ka to give your best when you have co-stars like them.”

When it comes to her love life, she denies that she’s now playing beautiful music with Kapuso co-actor Lucho Ayala? “Nagkasama kami sa isang play ng PETA pero hindi kami. Sobrang busy ako ngayon sa ‘Little Nanay’ so trabaho lang talaga ang focus ko sa ngayon.”

What can she say now that her last BF, Carl Guevarra, has found a new love in TV5’s Chanel Morales after they’ve worked together in “Wattpad Presents”? “Well, happy ako for them. Matagal na yun sa’min ni Carl at matagal na rin kaming parehong nakapag-move on.”

However, even the star herself started to question on why she was the chosen one for the Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie, My Bebe Love #KiligPaMore.

She tweeted a hilarious messaged saying that even before the people starts to bash her, she would be the first one to ask, 'Bakit ako?'.

Then, the Kapamilya actor and Deal Or No Deal host Luis Manzano found the humor behind the tweet of Maine Mendoza.
