MERYL STREEP, JEFF BRIDGES CLASH IN “THE GIVER” ON TAG TV

Surge into an age of injections and structured living in the soft sci-fi drama “The Giver,” starring Academy Award winners Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges together with Australian actor Brendon Thwaites, on Tag TV’s “Movie Blowout” this Saturday (June 24).

The 2014 American star-studded title includes cast members Alexander Skarsgård, Katie Holmes, Odeya Rush, Cameron Monaghan, and Taylor Swift.

Set in a seemingly picturesque world without war, suffering, differences or choice, “The Giver” tells the story of young Jonas (Brendon) who stumbles upon the Giver (Jeff), the sole keeper of the community's memories. Through him, Jonas discovers the true pains and pleasures of the "real" world. However, when he learns that the baby he loves as a brother will be eliminated, he comes to a decision—that to free his world, he has to defy it. He must do this against the Chief Elder (Meryl) who will do anything to stop him.

The social science fiction film, directed by Phillip Noyce, is adapted from the award-winning bestseller novel of the same name. It also received a People's Choice Award nomination for Favorite Dramatic Movie.

Haley Goldberg of LA Times compared “The Giver” to other dystopian novels-turned-movies such as “Hunger Games and “Divergent” as she reviewed both film and book novels.

“"The Giver" offers a more cerebral dystopia. Romance and violence exist only as undertones, with the driving force being the introspection of the main character, Jonas, as he takes on the work of the Giver and learns what his society left behind.”

Film critic Amy Nicholson also attested to this in her critique in the Houston Press. “The Giver is more simple and raw than the rest of today's teen dystopias that try to cram in unnecessary backstory and love triangles.”

She also praised Director Phillip Noyce’s creative montages in the film that distinctly depict the weight of what Jonas has learned, and voiced the film’s relatability to youth.

Tag TV brings Filipino-dubbed foreign films showcasing a collection of rom-coms, dramas, action-packed movies, thrillers, comedies, and the freshest Hollywood and Asian titles. It features “Movie Blowout” everySaturday night, offering exciting flicks for the whole family.

FOREIGN HEIST THRILLER “TO STEAL FROM A THIEF” BUSTS IN CINEMA ONE THIS SUNDAY

Witness a supposedly clear-cut bank heist that turned awry in the enraging Spanish-Argentine crime thriller “To Steal from a Thief” (Cien Años de Perdón), Cinema One’s blockbuster treat this Sunday (June 25).
The suspenseful robbery movie, dubbed in Filipino, is about six armed bandits who has one specific mission: to attack a bank in Valencia, Spain.

Nothing goes as planned that day, and with no back-up plan for a way out, mistrust haunts the gang leaders. Tensions also arise among security forces who respond, with orders becoming contradictory, leading to the shocker that the bank’s safe deposit boxes have something else besides gems and bills.
The film has received positive reviews from critics. “The first Spanish blockbuster of 2016, Daniel Calparsoro’s well-dressed, high-energy heist thriller blends action with a timely critique of contemporary political corruption,” says The Hollywood Reporter.
This action-packed movie stars Spanish actors Luis Tosar, Raúl Arévalo, and Jose Coronado, and Argentine actor Rodrigo de la Serna. It received two nominations in the 31st Goya Awards of the Spanish Academy of Cinema, one for best new actor for de la Serna and another for best screenplay for Jorge Guerricaechevarría.
Cinema One is the leading cable channel in the Philippines. Its programming includes a line-up of mainstream and independent local and foreign films, film related programming, and original content for television.
Catch the thrilling heist in “To Steal from a Thief” on Cinema One this “Blockbuster Sunday” (June 25) at 8pm. Cinema One is available on SkyCable and Destiny Cable Digital Channel 56, and Destiny Analog Ch. 37. Like Cinema One on Facebook at facebook.com/Cinema1channel to view full schedule.

ABS-CBN Foundation Europe to hold telethon for London Grenfell Tower fire victims

Photo 5- Filipina survivor Nida Mangoba recounts the tragic morning in an interview with Buenafe, as seen in a report on “The World Tonight.”

ABS-CBN Foundation Europe CIO joins public and private support for the victims of the massive fire that hit the 24-storey residential London Grenfell Tower in West London on June 14, by organizing the eight-hour “Operation Sagip Telethon: A Bayanihan For the Victims of the London Grenfell Tower Fire” on June 25 starting at 1 p.m., London time.

Driven by the Filipino tradition of community spirit or bayanihan, ABS-CBN Europe Foundation is making a call for donations not only in United Kingdom (UK) but from all over Europe, for the residents affected by the fire, via the hotline +44 (0) 2072444520.

Filipinos bring to life the bayanihan spirit by helping at the relief operations after the massive fire that hit Grenfell Tower in West London. Danny Buenafe IG

Joining “Operation Sagip Telethon” in this spirit of Filipino community are ABS-CBN Europe and Middle East Bureau ChiefDanny Buenafe from the ABS-CBN Europe office at Earl’s Court Road; and hosts and ABS-CBN TV and radio personalities top billed by Rose Eclarinal, and Jasmine Romero , plus artists Klarisse de Guzman, Noven Belleza, Jason Dy and DJ Jai Ho  from the ABS-CBN headquarters in Quezon City.  ABS-CBN Europe correspondents will also deliver live reports from key points in U.K.

“Operation Sagip Telethon: A Bayanihan For the Victims of the London Grenfell Tower Fire” is making the call for donations up to 9 p.m. London time.  The telethon will be streamed via TFC online (TFC.tv) and TFC IPTV in Europe, with live updates from facebook.com/TFCEurope.

According to Luis Bariuan, Trustee of ABS-CBN Foundation Europe“We are widely known for our unique culture and at its core is the quintessential Filipino trait of bayanihan which inspires us to come together as one community with one goal in mind.  We are rekindling that spirit of bayanihan by making a call for donations to support residents affected by the London Grenfell Tower fire”.

However, Bariuan says the community spirit does not stop there.  “In bringing life to bayanihan, we transcend barriers.  As this tragedy faces us, we hope to bring the needed help to both victims and survivors, including their families, with the support we may be able to inspire through the telethon”.
Filipinos from UK & nearby areas continue to help prepare relief goods for victims of Grenfell Tower fire as seen in this report by Buenafe for Balitang Global

The Philippine Embassy in London expresses gratitude to Filipinos who have so far volunteered at the reception centres and drop-off locations for donations.  The official statement from the Philippine Embassy shares: “We thank the Filipino communities in London and beyond for their generosity with their time and resources and their genuine concern as they volunteered and donated”.
To date, the United Kingdom Metropolitan Police reports that the death toll is at 79.  Metropolitan Police commander Stuart Cundy says the death toll may still rise.

As of this writing, The Philippine Embassy in London reports that nine Filipino families have been accounted for.

Some of these Filipinos include:

  • Elpidio Bonifacio who was in critical condition
  • a 7-month old baby girl who suffered suffocation and is now in a stable condition
  • Nida Mangoba who escaped the fire together with her husband and their son
  • and Clarita Cabides Ghavimi who was saved by a Croatian who also lives in the same tower.

One Filipina, Ligaya Moore, is presumed to have died in the fire after having remained missing since June 14.

The Philippine Embassy is pursuing search operations in rest centres and drop-off locations for donations, and hospitals to determine the total number of survivors and fatalities.
The diplomatic post has also requested for the official list of tenants of the tower from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

While it has yet to ascertain the total number of Filipinos affected, Consul General Senen Mangalile, in an interview with ABS-CBN.com, assures: “As always, the embassy is ready to give assistance to them".  These include assistance from the Department of Foreign Affairs in providing new passports and other vital documents.

The Grenfell Tower in London is a residential tower built in the 1970’s.   According to a report from Buenafe, the tower is home to many Filipinos because they were recipients of council housing flats extended by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to all low-income migrant families during the ‘70s.

To extend your donations for the victims of the London Grenfell Tower fire, you can call +44 (0) 2072444520 (call charges may apply).  You may also deposit through the

Transformers: The Last Knight Review - Spectacular Special Effects But Often Incoherent And Incomprehensible

‘TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT’ is the fifth installment in the successful Michael Bay franchise after the very first “Transformers”, inspired by Hasbro toys in 2007, which was followed by “Revenge of the Fallen” in 2009, “Dark of the Moon” in 2011, and “Age of Extinction” in 2014. It’s overblown, overlong and chaotic at 2 and ½ boring hours and though the special effects are truly spectacular and so good in assaulting one’s senses, the hyperactive on screen goings on are often incoherent, incomprehensible and frankly, we just don’t care.

The 5th movie starts with a prologue during the Dark Ages and attempts to make a revisionist history of King Arthur, who just had another bad reincarnation on screen in the recent big flop that was “King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword”. It seems the Transformers first manifested themselves in the time of Camelot. Anthony Hopkins is the newest recruit in the cast and we really wonder what made him accept this movie. He utters a line in the movie that certainly applies to him aptly, he being a knight himself in real life: "Deep down inside, you begin to wonder: Has my life been wasted?”

We’re sure he already earned oodles of money playing Odin of Asgard in the “Thor” movies. Here, he plays Sir Edmund, an English lord who is the keeper of, believe it or not, the secret history of Transformers through various centuries. Do you know, for instance, that Hitler was actually killed by a good robot? Do you think you can buy that? And all the other nonsense in this movie?

Good Autobots vs. bad Decepticon robots are waging a war against each other. Optimus Prime has disappeared, floating around in space, and is turned into an evil robot by Quintessa, the ruler of Cybertron who hates our planet with a passion. Hopefully, he will ne able to get through his identity crisis. Then there’s a contest as to who will get hold of an all-powerful staff of life that has been hidden away for centuries. The staff can signal the end of life on Planet Earth and the eternal supremacy of Cybertron.

Mark Wahlberg returns as Cade, the American who’s the leader of the resistance who gets hold of a magical talisman that will help him a big deal in the final confrontation at the Stonehenge. He finds a romantic interest this time in Laura Haddock (Lucrezia in "Da Vinci's Demons") as Vivian, the Oxford professor with a mysterious lineage that links her to the all powerful staff. Aside from her, there’s also a teenage girl who survives the robot attacks on her city, Chicago, and becomes an ally of Wahlberg.

In the scenes set in 5th century Camelot, Stanley Tucci plays the Wizard Merlin, trying to provide some comic relief and failing miserably, along with John Turturro as Agent Simmons who is totally wasted in scenes showing him speaking desperately while in a pay phone in Cuba.

In other words, it’s all one big mess and Michael Bay tries to compensate the epic failures of his movie with relentless action scenes of metal crashing over metal, but this can be amusing only for a while and you’ll still prefer watching a good story with relatable characters that us viewers can connect with and which the movie sorely lacks. No wonder our grandson fell asleep while watching it. Hindi niya talaga kinaya.

Is Anne Curtis Having A Quickie Wedding In Europe With Fiance Erwan Heussaff?

ANOTHER COUPLE whose coming nuptials are being anticipated is Anne Curtis and Erwan Heussaff, who are now currently in France. It’s not exactly clear why they are there. Some quarters say they are just having pre-nuptial photos but other writers quickly jump into the conclusion that they must be having a secret marriage in Europe, just like what Erwan’s sister, Solenn Heussaff, did when she married Argentinian beau Nico Bolzico.

Anne herself posted copies of her photos with Erwan, flashing the huge engagement ring he gave her and addressing him as “Mon Amour”. Could it be that they’ll have a smaller wedding there before having a bigger one here in Manila? As of now, we don’t know how Anne can attend to this since she is still busy finishing the shooting of her action movie, “Buy Bust”, with Director Erik Matti.

Ai Ai De Las Alas Should Have A Comprehensive Pre-Marital Preparation Program Before She Takes The Plunge With Her Third Husband

AI AI DE LAS ALAS once said she’s not in a hurry to tie the knot with her current inamorato, Gerald Sibayan. But she seems she changed her mind as the latest buzz is that she has rushed everything and they will face the altar before the year is over. The date we heard is December 12, which is about six months from now. It’s said her good friend Marian Rivera is giving her a wedding gown as a wedding gift, worth half a million pesos no less. Wow! That really costs quite a fortune.

We wish Ai Ai the best since, after all, this is her third wedding. After the past two ones, we want to think that she must have learned all the lessons anyone should need to know about getting married. Her first marriage was with singer Miguel Vera who turned out to have been married to someone else already, so their union was eventually annulled. Her second marriage was to Jed Salang who she accused of beating her up. They were married in Las Vegas so it’s easier to get a divorce there.

This time, her groom is just about the same age as her eldest son, Sancho Vito. So more than an extravagant wedding gown, I think the best gift they can receive is a truly good and comprehensive pre-marital preparation program, for them to be able to anticipate all the pitfalls and problems that they might be facing ahead as a couple because of the great disparity in their ages.

They owe it to themselves to get this kind of preparation as it's like being forearmed. It might all be sunny and bright now that they’re just starting, but as we all know, as days pass by, the stark reality of living together as husband and wife, day in-day out, will take its toll on them and so it is better to be fully prepared in handling the humps and bumps of what maybe a quaky roller coaster ride.

Helen Gamboa Back On TV After Suffering From Slipped Disc Hosting A Cooking Show, 'From Helen's Kitchen', On Colours On Cignal TV Starting July 1st

HELEN GAMBOA was last seen on the big screen in “Etiquette for Mistresses” two years ago in a special role as the mistress of a very powerful man, and on TV in “Walang Hanggan” in 2012 with Coco Martin. Now, she’s back hosting a cooking show, “From Helen’s Kitchen” on Colours, exclusively on Cignal TV, starting July 1, Saturday at 8 PM.

Helen was the busiest singer-actress in the late 60s and veritably the movie queen during the transition period from Susan-Amalia to Nora-Vilma in the early 70s. She had many hit singles then like “Together Again”, “I’m a Tiger” and “Two Can Have a Party”. The latter she did with Tilt Down Men, the band of her would be husband, Tito Sotto, and that’s how they met. She also had albums released internationally under the name Bunny Chanel.

She did several dance movies, like “Bang Shang a Lang”, “Operation Discotheque”, “Let’s Go”, “The Bugaloo” and became the favorite leading lady of action stars, notably the late FPJ with whom she did “Dugo sa Buhangin”, the first local movie filmed on location on the Vigan sand dunes. Then she got married at the peak of her career, had four kids, and returned to be a respected best actress winner in dramas like “Bagong Bayani” and Lino Brocka’s “Kailan Mahuhugasan ang Kasalanan”. She branched out to teleseryes doing “Tayong Dalawa” and “Walang Hanggan” then stopped due to health reasons.

“I had a slipped disc so I had to slow down,” she says. “But ngayon, okay na, I feel great through therapy and exercise. I’m back to doing a soap on GMA-7, ‘The Good Teacher’, with Marian Rivera. And I’m happy to doing ‘From Helen’s Kitchen’, which is taped right in my own kitchen at our White Plains home, as cooking is really my passion. It’s something I inherited from my mother kaya bata pa ako, I watched her how she prepares our meals. Then when I got married, I found out totoo palang cooking is the best way to a man’s heart kasi lahat ng niluluto ko, gustong-gusto ni Tito. Sa mga anak ko, my daughter Lala and my son Gian, namana yung galing namin ng mama ko sa pagluluto.”

The show is produced by IdeaFirst Company of Perci Intalan and Jun Lana. At its presscon held at the new Seda Vertis North near Trinoma, a video was shown with good friends of Helen expressing their well wishes for her new show, including her kumareng Bibeth Orteza, brother in law Vic Sotto and with Pauleen, Eat Bulaga hosts Alden Richards, Maine Mendoza, Allan K, Ryzza Mae Dizon, Ruby Rodriguez and Patricia Tumulak.

The first episode of the show was shown during the presscon and the special guest is Carmina Villaroel. All the 14 episodes of the first season have been taped and the other guests include Eric Quizon, Maricel Soriano, Raymart Santiago, Pops Fernandez, Pauleen Luna, Albert Martinez, Gladys Reyes, Donita Rose, Pauleen Luna, Danica Sotto and husband Marc Pingris, and her own kids Ciara and Gian Sotto. While cooking with them, we get to know more of Helen and her guests through their good-natured banter and candid conversations. At the end of each episode, Helen prepares a special “pabaon” or take away present for her guest and at the presscon, she gave everyone her own special recipe of pork asado wrapped so meticulously that it won’t spill and the freshness of the dish is preserved.

She and Tito have been married for 46 years and theirs is one of the most stable marriages in showbiz. What’s their secret? “Wala, We just really love each other.”

How did she feel when Sen. Tito was heavily criticized for his comment on Sec. Judy Taguiwalo during a senate hearing? “You know what, yung mga ganyan, hindi ko na lang binibigyan ng time kasi ayokong masaktan at mag-suffer. After 46 years, I know my husband better than anybody and we’ve always had peace and harmony in our home.”
