Cong. Alfred Vargas Back In Two New Films: 'Ang Guro Kong Hindi Marunong Magbasa' For Cinemalaya & 'Ang Sikreto Ng Piso' For Metro-Manila Filmfest

CONG. ALFRED VARGAS might be a dedicated congressman in Quezon City, but he has not forgotten his roots, which is acting. After a short guest stint in “Encantadia”, he has now just finished a new movie, “Ang Guro Kong Hindi Marunong Magbasa”, an entry in the Cinemalaya Filmfest that will be shown in August.

But even before that movie is released in theaters, he has already started shooting another film that is meant to be an entry in the December Metro Manila Filmfest, “Ang Sikreto ng Piso (The Secret of the Philippine Peso Coin)”. Both films are written and directed by actor Perry Escano and these projects are his directorial debuts.

Alfred plays the title role in “Gurong Hindi Marunong Magbasa”. In “Sikreto”, a family-oriented comedy-satire, he plays a young father, Ronnie, who has to make sacrifices for the sake his wife and only son.

Based on actual events concerning the smuggling of Philippine peso coins in 2006, Ronnie is forced to accept an unusual task that will give him a high income: to collect as many as one peso coins that he could. He soon finds out why the coins are being smuggled abroad.

What is the secret of the Philippine peso coin? Can it help save the life of his sick son who is languishing in agony in a hospital? These are the questions that the movie will aim to answer. Also in the cast of the movie are Joey Marquez, Wendell Ramos, Ernie Garcia, Lou Veloso, Beverly Salviejo, Long Mejia, Aikihiro Blanco, Joanne Marie Tan, Paul Sy and Yuan Francisco. Alfred wants to get Judy Ann Santos to play the role of his wife, but this is still under negotiation.

Meantime, Cong. Alfred is also busy preparing for the big church wedding he’ll have with his wife, Yasmine Espiritu, on July 23. They had a civil wedding in August, 2010 and have two daughters, Alexandra and Aryanna. Alfred proposed to Yasmine on exactly the same date, 7-23, a year ago at a plush restaurant in QC. “Favorite numbers kasi namin ang number 7 and 23,” he explains.
