Bea Binene Transforms From Wild Feral Child To A Beautiful, Sophisticated Young Lady In 'Hangang Makita Kang Muli'

BEA BINENE says regular viewers of her hit afternoon soap, “Hanggang Makita Kang Muli”, should not miss its last four weeks of telecast as they will get a big surprise. She will be taken to the United States and when she returns to Manila, there will be a very transformation on her. The show will end on June 24 and will be replaced by “Sa Piling ni Nanay”.

“Pero bago yung big transformation ko, yayain ako ni Derrick Monasterio as Calvin na magtanan kami kasi ayaw niyang mawala ako sa buhay niya,” she says. “So we arrange to meet sa isang lugar but then, hindi niya ako sisiputin. Sa halip, ang darating is Kim Rodriguez as Claire who tells me siya darating kasi si Kim ang pinili niya. What I don’t know is nalaman ni Kim ang pagtatanan namin at isinumbong siya sa father niyang si Tito Ramon Christopher kaya pinigilan siyang makipagtanan sa akin.”

In the USA, Bea as Ana blooms and becomes a beautiful and sophisticated young lady. When she returns to Manila, those who’ve known her before couldn’t believe that she’s the same Ana, the feral child, they’ve known before.

Randy Santiago Returns To GMA-7 As Director Of Naughty Sitcom 'A1 Ko Sa'Yo', Makes Sure He Won't Have Problems With The MTRCB

RANDY SANTIAGO wants to direct younger brother Raymart in a sitcom now that he’s back with the Kapuso station. Raymart used to have a hit sitcom with GMA, “Kool Ka Lang”, with Joey Marquez and Bonel Balingit, that run from 1998 to 2003. Since then, he’s been doing nothing but dramas in primetime and afternoon soaps.

“Magaling si Raymart mag-comedy at ngayong binabalik ang sitcoms sa GMA, it’d be nice for him to do another comedy show,” says Randy. “Nag-iisip na nga kami ng maganda at naiibang format para sa kanya.”

Randy used to direct only for ABS-CBN so he’s glad to be given the chance to do a show for GMA. “Nagulat ako nang tawagan nila ako and offered ‘A1 Ko Sa’yo’. Maganda yung concept at puro magagaling ang members ng cast so enjoy akong gawin ito, lalo na’t kasama pa namin ang Cannes best actress na si Jaclyn Jose who’s really very good not only in drama but also in comedy. Medyo naughty itong show namin but I will make sure we'll come up with wholesome episodes na hindi magkakaproblema sa MTRCB.”
It’s like a homecoming for him at GMA-7. “Kasi dito naman talaga ako nagsimula noong araw sa ‘Lunch Date’ in the 80s, which ran for seven years. Tapos naging host din ako ng show na ipinalit dito, ‘Salo-Salo Together’. Pero ngayon pa lang ako magwo-work for them as director at nagpapasalamat ako sa tiwalang ibinigay nila sa akin.”

“A1 Ko Sa’yo” will start airing tonight at GMA Telebabad after “Juan Happy Love Story”. Don’t miss the rollicking pilot episode with Lovi Poe as the special guest star.

Louise De Los Reyes & Juancho Trivino Elated Over The Success Of The Pilot Week Of Their Show, 'Magkaibang Mundo'

LOUISE DE LOS REYES and Juancho Trivino are both so happy that their show, “Magkaibang Mundo”, has been rating so high since it started airing right after “Eat Bulaga” last week. “Nakakatuwa nga kasi ang ganda na ng feedback sa social media, mataas pa lagi ang ratings ng buong pilot week, so inspired kami lahat sa taping, led by Direk Mark Sicat de la Cruz, para mas lalo pang mapaganda ang show,” says Louise. “We really want to thank all the viewers who’ve been watching our show,” adds Juancho. “Sobrang nakakataba ng puso kasi may mga taong kapag nakikita ako ngayon in public, ang tawag na sa akin is Elfino, which is my name in the story. Natutuwa raw sila sa akin sa role ko bilang duwendeng naging kaibigan at tumutulong kay Louise who plays Princess na inaapi ng tiyahin niyang si Gina Alajar.”

Louise’s character is now a grown up in the show, still maltreated by Gina as Noreen and her two cousins, Isabelle de Leon as Sophie and Liezel Lopez as Analyn. For a while, she’s puzzled why her dwarf friend Elfino has been absent but he will be coming back this week as a grown up, played by the hunky Juancho, and will continue to brighten up her life that is darkened by her greedy relatives who want to get her family’s riches. She continues to wait for the return of her missing mom, Assunta de Rossi as Amanda.

Andi Eigenmann's Dormant Career Gets A Big Boost With Her Participation At The Cannes FilmFest

ADMIT IT or not, Andi Eigenmann’s career suffered last year when she did three movies for Viva that all dismally flopped at the tills: “Tragic Theatre”, “Your Place or Mine” and the remake of “Angela Markado”. ABS-CBN has not given her any new show after she supported Anne Curtis in “Dyesebel”. Her messy love life and her tiff with her own mom, Jaclyn Jose, also didn’t help her to have a good and positive image in the eyes of the viewing public.

She herself admitted that she almost thought of quitting showbiz. “Mahirap, e,” she was quoted as saying. “Minsan parang you just don’t want to deal with it anymore. I don’t want to live in a world where all I do is explain myself. My past doesn’t define me. I know that I’m worth something more.”

But now, her inclusion in the cast of the Cannes Filmfest entry, “Ma Rosa”, and her personal appearance on the red carpet and the awards night, when her mother won as best actress, no doubt help boost her career. She was included by the prestigious magazine Vanity Fair in their best dressed list and now, she even got deals for international pictorials for France and Russia which we hope will lead to movie projects for her to do abroad.

No doubt this will give her career the big boost it needs. “I’m just taking this as a chance to begin again. This time, to be recognized and to be appreciated for what I can do, not just for what I’ve done, not just for how I look but for what I can do because I’m really so passionate about my craft. I feel like my dad (the late Mark Gil) is just up there looking down at us and he’s very happy. ‘Yun ‘yung isa sa mga sayang kasi wala na siya rito para ma-witness ‘yun with us. My dad has always been one of my biggest fans and to know that I made it, kahit na one week lang. Even if isang maliit na bagay lang ang nagawa ko, na mapabilang sa isang pelikula na na-recognize abroad, alam ko na sobrang proud siya sa amin ni mommy.”

Andi will soon start shooting a new movie for Viva, “Camp Sawi”, about women broken hearted with their failed relationships, co-starring Arci Munoz, Bela Padilla, Yassi Pressman, new comedian Kim Molina and with Dennis Trillo.

The announcement was made by URCC on its official Facebook page saying that they have already contacted both of the actors and they confirmed that they will be doing it inside the cage.

The invitation was made by Alvin Aguilar, the founder of URCC. He claims that they could settle the argument inside the cage for them to be able to make something good about what happened.

Baron Geisler And Kiko Matos Will Fight Inside The Cage Of URCC Cage To Settle Their Argument!

If the said event will push through, the charge of the tickets would go straight to the charity.

“If you guys are going to fight in the bar, you guys are both actors, famous personalities now, that doesn’t set a good example for anybody. Why don’t you settle your fight like real Filipino men? You go in the cage, you finish it, after that kamayan, then tapos na. Kaysa magha-hassle pa kayo ng ibang tao when you go in a bar, you break property, you hurt other people, magkakademandahan pa kayo,” said Aguilar.

The Nice Guys Movie Review: A Very Entertaining Action-Comedy That You Should Not Miss!

SET IN Los Angeles in 1977, “The Nice Guys” is a buddy action-comedy from Shane Black, who wrote the hit “Lethal Weapon” of Mel Gibson and also wrote and directed “Iron Man 3”. It stars Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe as unlikely buddies who become sparring partners out on a mission.

Ryan Gosling is Holland March, a private eye who’s hired by Mrs. Glenn (Lois Smith) on a case involving a well known porn star named Misty Mountains (Muriello Tello). Misty had a much publicized suicide when her car crashes into the house of a young man. Her dying words are “How do you like my car, big boy? But Mrs. Glenn, Misty’s aunt, claims to have seen her niece still alive two days after her alleged death. Ryan doubts this but accepts the job as he’s desperate for work.

Russell Crowe is Jackson Healy, a violence-prone hired enforcer tasked by district attorney Judith Kutner (Kim Basinger) to look for her missing daughter, Amelia (Margaret Qualley). His encounter with a pair of hired thugs makes Russell conclude there is more going on with this case than meets the yes. He then gets Ryan, along with his daughter Holly (Angourie Rice), to help search for Amelia and investigate if there’s a larger conspiracy behind the whole thing.

Holly becomes a veritable third member of the team. A tough and feisty 13-year old who won’t tolerate nonsense from anyone, she even considers hiring Russell to beat up her friend Janet. Holly and her friends help forward the narrative with their own quips. The style of this detective comedy is a successful mixture or various elements that range from absurd to great effect, like mysterious women, nifty coincidences, precocious children, demolished houses and strange problems requiring to be solved. It pays tribute to other filmmakers and actors like Blake Edwards, Jean Paul Belmondo and others.

Gosling and Crowe look like they enjoy working with each other and prove to be effective as odd buddies, delivering their snappy dialogue, verbal punches and hilarious antics with great comic timing and even resorting to slapstick and pratfalls. They have great chemistry as a comedic duo and their not-so-happy back stories provide more delightful hilarity in the movie. They can be quite inept, but we still cheer and root for them.

Giving them excellent support is the scene-stealing teen star Angourie Rice who gives the film its much needed heart when she forms an unexpected closeness to Russell, to whom she serves as some kind of conscience, while also helping her own drunken dad to put some order in his personal life and in his career.
Ryan, Russell and Rice are the main stars but the ensemble cast of characters all deliver splendid performances including Kim Basinger, Margaret Qualley and Matt Bomer as a dangerous hit man known as John Boy. The movie also has great production design with much attention to detail that will make you relive the 70s culture, from the hairstyles to the costumes and the actual sets used.

Shane Black also helmed the 2005 movie, “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”, a black comedy-crime movie starring Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer that got very positive reviews. Both “Kiss Kiss” and “Nice Guys” draw on neo-Noir filmmaking traditions presented in an absurdly comical manner. But don’t miss “Nice Guys” as it is more accessible as a whodunit in its treatment and offers much more entertainment value in its twists and turns of plot. It harks back to the kind of action movies made before without any CGI special effects and is certainly a welcome treat and much fun for moviegoers who are tired of all those superhero flicks with characters who do the most impossible things.

Andrea Torres On Sef Cadayona And The Shocking Twist That Happens This Week In 'The Millionaire's Wife'

HOW DOES Andrea Torres feel about the statement of rumored BF Sef Cadayona that she is just his best friend for the past two years and that he’ll admit it if they’re really on? “Totoo naman yun,” she says. “We’ve been very good friends mula noong magkasama kami sa ‘Bubble Gang’. At wala naman talagang aaminin about us other than that. Basta I’m happy for him dahil ang ganda ng takbo ng career niya and he has two new shows, ‘Laff Camera Action’ and ‘A1 Ko Sa’yo’.”

Sef gets to work with Cannes best actress Jaclyn Jose in the sexy comedy ‘A1 Ko Sa’yo’ while she’s working with Jaclyn in the drama ‘The Millionaire’s Wife’. “Yes, suwerte nga naming dalawa we both get to work with a great actress like Tita Jaclyn na napakabait kasama. Lahat kaming co-stars niya sa ‘The Millionaire’s Wife’, we’re very proud of her. Nataon, si Sid Lucero, who plays her son in the show, nanalo ring best actor for the movie ‘Toto’ sa Los Angeles, kaya noong last taping namin, the whole cast and crew gave them a blow out sa set bilang selebrasyon sa pagdadala nila ng karangalan sa ating bansa.

Yassi Pressman On Breaking Up With Andre Paras And Interpreting The Entry 'Dumagagundong' In Philpop 2016

YASSI PRESSMAN is so happy that she was chosen to be the interpreter of the PhilPop 2016 song finalist, “Dumadagundong”, written by Mike Villegas and DJ Brian Cua. “First time ko pa lang narinig yung song, nagustuhan ko na agad,” she says. “Sabi ko, sana, akin na ito ibigay kasi sobrang perfect ng sound. It’s so new and tipong maghi-hit. So sobrang saya ko talaga nang sa akin nga na-assign yung kanta and I’m so proud to work with Mike and DJ Brian.”

“Dumadagundong” means “thundering” and it describes the feeling we have when we fall madly in love with someone who happens to no longer be available and is off limits. Yassi adds: “Maingay, magulo at talagang dumadagundong, hindi matahimik ang damdamin ng isang taong umiibig nang palihim at patago.”

She will be competing in PhilPop with her own sister, Issa Pressman (ex-GF of Derrick Monasterio), who belongs to the girl band Sugar & Spice that’s interpreting the song “Baliw sa Ex-Boyfriend Ko” by Joan Da.

And how is Yassi’s own love life? Is she still on with Andre Paras? “Ay, wala na kami, hiwalay na. Hiwalay na kasi magkaiba na ang projects na ginagawa namin ngayon. Hindi hiwalay as lovers dahil never naman naging kami. We became close, grabeng sobrang close, but ngayon hindi na kasi hindi na kami nagkikita. He’s with GMA-7 and I’m with TV5. I am shooting a new movie and he’s not a part of it.”

Yassi is in Viva’s “Camp Sawi”, which is about a center for ladies nursing a broken heart. She appears with Arci Munoz, Bela Padilla, Andi Eigenmann and Kim Molina. “We have just one leading man, pero hindi pa puedeng sabihin kung sino. Our director is Irene Villamor, who used to assist Direk Joyce Bernal. We’re supposed to shoot on location in a beautiful island in Cebu this June, for eight days straight.”

Money Monster Movie Review: Great Performances From George Clooney And Julia Roberts, Well Directed By Jodie Foster

WE THOROUGHLY enjoyed Jodie Foster’s latest directorial work, “Money Monster”, after her last one, “The Beaver”, failed to impress us. This time, she comes up with a thriller starring two Hollywood icons, George Clooney and Julia Roberts, in non-romantic roles. George is Lee Gates, the host of a TV show called “Money Monster” that dispenses financial advice to viewers. He gives tips on which stocks are hot and encourage them to invest. Julia is Patty, his show’s producer-director.

While airing his show’s newest episode live, a man disguised as a delivery boy suddenly barges in on the set, Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell), armed with a gun and a vest full of bombs which he orders George to put on. Kyle previously listened to George’s advice to invest his savings in IBIS Clear Capital, which then crashed with $800 million lost as a result of what’s allegedly a computer glitch, so he also lost all his hard earned money and this makes him go berserk.

Everyone inside the studio is practically held hostage as Kyle threatens to blow up the bomb. He wants to know why George is deceiving his viewers. The police soon arrive and, as may be expected, the hostage drama becomes an instant big hit reality TV show, closely watched by everyone not only in the U.S. but also abroad.

The movie seems to be a combination of the recent “The Big Short” (also about how big business rips off the unsuspecting wage earner) and “Dog Day Afternoon” (Sydney Lumet’s hit 1975 film about a bank robbery gone wrong). It is directed by two-time Oscar best actress, Jodie Foster, and she succeeds in building up the suspense with her swiftly paced narrative.

George does well as the beleaguered TV host who’s also a showman garbed in flashy costumes and even does entertaining dance routines with his backup dancers to hold the attention of viewers while talking about stocks. But it’s Julia who registers so well as the smart, strong-willed but level-headed TV exec who tries to be in control even in the worst kind of situations. With the help of an earpiece, she connects with George secretly and serves as a combination of his conscience and also his tactician who figures out the right things to do.

Jack O’Connell is likewise superb as an ordinary man who felt so cheated he loses all his marbles and demands answers in a violent manner. A great scene shows him with his pregnant girlfriend (Emily Meade in a short but sizzling, scene-stealing performance) berating him and humiliating him on national TV for being such a dumb ass. It’s meant to be funny but Jack comes out quite sympathetic, looking so lost and confused about what he has done.

Also giving good support are Dominic West as IBIS CEO Walt Camby who’s the real monster here as the rich executive who makes the little guys suffer with his unabated corporate greed, Caitriona Balfe as IBIS director of communications with a heart and conscience Diane Lester, and Christopher Denham as George’s efficient assistant who he asked to test out a new erectile cream approved by the FDA. The fine ensemble acting alone of the entire cast already makes this movie quite worth watching.

Kate Brios Produces Urban Legend 'Teniente Gimo' About An Aswang In Iloilo, Roi Vinzon Claims The Project Is His Idea But Kate Denies It

KATE BRIOS, an Ilongga producer-actress, seems to have a mission of making movies out of Iloilo urban legends on aswangs. She first made a movie out of “Maria Labo”, a beautiful lass allegedly raped by several men and turned into an aswang. Now, she’s all set to show “Teniente Gimo”, about a teniente del barrio who has many more colorful stories.

Some say he’s from the town of Dingle in Iloilo, but other say he’s actually from Duenas. A daughter of his invited two friends to sleepover in their house and discovered one of them will be eaten by Gimo’s clan of aswangs. She heard she’s the one chosen but she exchanged places with Gimo’s own daughter so it his own daughter that Gimo and his aswangs get to kill.

Now, Kate’s KIB Productions and Viva Films will be showing their movie version of this horror story, “Teniente Gimo, Ang Aswang Man, May Hugot Din”, directed by Roland M. Sanchez, an NBI investigator. Gimo is played by award-winning actor John Regala and playing his daughter is Eliza Pineda as Ella. But she is given a love interest instead, Joshua Dionisio as Victor. Also in the cast are Julio Diaz (before his stroke), Mon Confiado, Suzette Ranillo, and Kate Brios herself playing an important role. This will open in theaters on Wednesday, June 1.

Kate partnered with Roi Vinzon when she did “Maria Labo”, which was shown last November and had Pres.elect Digong Duterte as the special guest at its premiere night as he’s a good friend of Kate. Now, Roi has filed a libel case against her because she allegedly accused him in social media of taking advantage of her when she gave him P2.5 million to produce “Maria Labo”, which he directed. Roi says it’s also his idea to film “Teniente Gimo”, but Kate denies this and says the movie is based on a serialized radio program.

But Kate said she actually spent P6 million for “Maria Labo” just for the movie to be released in theaters. She says she enough evidence about this and she plans to also file a case of estafa against Roi, who’s now part of GMA-7’s new sitcom, “A1 Ko Sa’yo”, playing the role of a closet queen.

Roi filed his libel case against Kate in his native Pampanga, so Kate, in turn, will file her case against him in her native Bacolod. Her lawyer is Duterte’s spokesman, Atty. Sal Panelo. Well, we just hope that this is not just a gimmick between Kate and Roi to help drum up publicity for “Teniente Gimo” as there is no doubt that the case will help for the new movie to be talked about.

Charo Santos Concio Celebrates 25th Anniversary Of 'Maalaala Mo Kaya' & Stars In A New Movie, 'Ang Babaeng Humayo', Directed By Lav Diaz

ALTHOUGH CHARO SANTOS has been replaced by Carlo Katigbak as ABS-CBN Pres. & CEO when she reached the mandatory retirement age of 60, she remains to be a top Kapamilya exec as president of the ABS-CBN University and as Chief Content Officer. And yes, she remains to be the host of “Maalaala Mo Kaya” which is now celebrating its 25th anniversary as Asia’s longest running drama anthology show. Not only that, Charo is also back on the big screen in Lav Diaz’ latest opus, “Ang Babaeng Humayo”.

“After he came back from Berlin for ‘Hele ng Hiwagang Hapis’, he asked me if I’d still be willing to act,” she says. “I said it would depend on the project and on the character I’d play. A few days later, he sent me the script for ‘Babaeng Humayo’ and I read it. I liked it, so I shot it na. The last movie I did is ‘Alfredo Lim Story’ with Eddie Garcia in 1992. Ang tagal na rin, so na-miss ko talagang magpelikula.”

She won’t say what the story is all about and who are her co-stars. “We’ll have another presscon for that in July,” says her sister, Malou Santos, who’s Star Cinema’s top exec. “Basta magugulat kayo kasi ibang-iba ang Charo Santos na mapapanood nyo sa role na ginagampanan niya roon.”

Meantime, Charo is proud that “Maalaala Mo Kaya” is celebrating four special stories starting this Saturday as their 25th anniversary offering. Did she really expect the show to last for 25 years? “No, I never imagined that it’d last this long. When we’re starting, ang gusto ko pang title was ‘Among My Souvenirs’, but Freddie Garcia says dapat kundiman, yung Tagalog, kaya naging MMK. It’s quite a feat for any show to celebrate its 25th anniversary. So many writers and directors started their careers with us. Naging training ground ito for some of our top directors today.”

So what’s the secret of its longevity? “I think it’s because of the impact of the true stories we present. We provide hope, inspiration and positive influence to our Kapamilya viewers kaya nakaka-relate talaga sila. And also, utang namin ito sa lahat ng tao working hard behind the scenes para mapaganda ang bawat episode nito each week.”

And chief writer Mel del Rosario adds: “We also owe it to the credibility and leadership of our host, na mas lalo pang bumabata sa paglipas ng mga taon.”

So what’s Charo’s secret for looking so young? “I just go with the flow. Hindi ako yung nagpaplano na dapat ganito, ganyan. Basta whatever the universe offers to me, kung maganda, I’m open to it, I’m adventurous. Also, I like kasi what I’m doing. It’s not like work for me, so it’s not stressful. I also look at life with a very positive perspective.”

As MMK celebrates its 25th year, you can now check on all its past episodes on its website and send your own life stories via email to mmk.abs-cbn.com. They’re also issuing a special commemorative anniversary album featuring top names like Sharon Cuneta, Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Lea Salonga, Gary Valenciano and more.

MMK merchandise items like shirts will also be available at the ABS-CBN Store. They will continue to visit provinces for the Regional Story Gathering and Charo will reunite with past letter senders starting in Davao on July 6. She also will be visiting various countries abroad for Kuwentuhang Kapamilya as MMK is one of the top shows on TFC. This will start in Madrid, Spain on June 26, then Hongkong on July 24, plus Canada, USA and Japan later. For updates, just follow @MMKOfficial on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

This Saturday at 8:15 PM, the first story in their anniversary presentations is “Batang Samal”, starring Abby Bautista as a tribal girl who dreams of being a teacher. This was shot on location in Pagadian, with Princess Punzalan as special guest. For their Father’s Day presentation, they present “Caveman”, starring Zanjoe Marudo as a very poor father who becomes homeless and takes his children to live in a cave.

The third story is “Pole Dancer”, with the very sexy Jessy Mendiola in the title role. The fourth and final episode star Angel Locsin and JC De Vera in the true story of a dying little girl whose battle with the big C became a hit in social media, “Courageous Caitlin”.

Why GMA-7 Is Bringing Back Sitcoms Like 'A1 Ko Sa'Yo' On Weeknights Primetime Programming

WE ASKED GMA-7 executive LilyBeth Rasonable why they’re bringing back #sitcoms like “ #A1 Ko Sa’yo” on #primetime, which is now dominated by dramatic teleseryes. “A1 Ko Sa’yo” will start airing on June 2 and will be shown right after “Juan Happy Love Story”, replacing a Koreanovela.

“Dati namang kilala ang GMA as the home of popular situation comedies,” Ms. Rasonable explains. “We had hit sitcoms then like ‘Ober Da Bakod’, ‘Beh Bote Nga’, ‘Bahay Mo Ba’to’, ‘Kool Ka Lang’, ‘Lagot Ka Isusumbong Kita’, all part of GMA’s KiliTV. Hindi naman nawawala ang comedy shows namin dahil up to now, we still have ‘Pepito Manaloto’, ‘Ismol Family’ and ‘Bubble Gang’ on weekends. But we noticed that on primetime, nagki-click ang romantic comedies namin lately, like ‘Because of You’ and now, ‘Juan Happy Love Story’ na very positive ang feedback and reception ng viewers, so we’re bringing back sitcoms on weeknight primetime. It seems people like to laugh a lot more these days, gusto nila ng light entertainment and they’ve had enough of heavy dramas.”

She says they got Randy Santiago, well known for directing comedies, to helm “A1 Ko Sa’yo”. “Maganda ang pilot episode ng show at maraming possibilities ng katatawanan sa characters nito. Timing pa, kapapanalo lang ni #JaclynJose as best actress sa Cannes and she’s riotous in her role as the head of a talent agency na gustong makadiskubre ng next Miss Universe. She herself is a frustrated beauty pageant contestant and now, she’s married to Gardo Versoza pero wala naman silang sex life for so long. Masaya ang show and I’m sure viewers will enjoy watching it.” #teleserye

Tatay Kong Sexy Movie Review: One Of The Most Enjoyable, Entertaining Local Films We've Seen This Year

DIRECTOR JOEY Reyes and Sen. Jinggoy Estrada have proven themselves a winning team in two past movies they’ve made before, “Katas ng Saudi” and “Magkaibigan”, both award-winning wholesome family dramedies. They now show that good things come in three’s as their third collaboration, “Tatay Kong Sexy”, is another heartwarming story of a widowed father struggling to raise his three kids by himself.

The characters and the situations in this film are all so real, not just an over-engineered enterprise with manipulative plot mechanics in the script aimed to make pa-cute and please the crowd. Sen. Jinggoy is Paquito, owner of a car repair shop whose wife died of the big C five years ago. He has three kids: Empress Schuck as Mariel, Jolo Estrada as Frankie and Maliksi Morales as Ken.

He then meets Maja Salvador as Monette, after she had her car repaired in his shop. Maja works as a fixer and takes care of her sister’s love son. There’s mutual attraction between them but this is not articulated. Problems arise when Empress’ boyfriend, Patrick (Dominic Roque), whose parents are very wealthy, gets her pregnant. Patrick works as manager in a bank that is owned by his own father no less (the late Mark Gil.)

But naturally, Jinggoy fumes. Empress, who is initially hostile to Maja, finds an ally in her so it becomes easier for Jinggoy to accept his only daughter’s pregnancy. But things get complicated when Dominic’s mom (Marina Benipayo) advises him that they’re against the idea of their son marrying Empress just because she’s now preggy.

What’s nice about the movie is that it doesn’t dwell on negative situations. When problems arise, they are solved easily without unnecessary histrionics and melodramatic confrontations. The pacing is very brisk and there’s no time to get bored. This is a comedy where the laughter is not forced. And there are many really hilarious laugh-out-loud scenes.

You should watch out for that dinner scene where Jinggoy and family are invited by Dominic’s family to their own well appointed home. Jinggoy is dressed to kill for the occasion, with Maja herself as his stylist, and the result is truly quite funny. You can easily observe the disparity in the economic and social standing of the two families as they interact with each other.

The acting of the entire cast is also uniformly good. Maja easily stands out in her “babaeng bakla” role, which she delivers so effortlessly. She is just a natural ribtickler in a number of scenes, like in restaurant scene with Jinggoy’s family where she is formally introduced to his kids. Her being a motor mouth turns off Empress who tries to embarrass her but she’s completely oblivious of Empress’ sarcasm.

She’s also good in the dinner scene with Dominic’s family where she praises the dishes laid out for them and asks: “Ano to? Niluto nyo o binili lang?” We honestly believe Maja is better than most of her colleagues and contemporaries at ABS-CBN these days.

Sen. Jinggoy invests his role as the caring and sensitive father with the right mixture of dignity and comic charm. Empress is also very effective as the daughter who admits her mistakes to her forgiving dad. She sizzles with the right emotions in that scene where she dumps Dominic for refusing to marry her. All the rest give excellent support, including Beauty Gonzales as Empress’ best friend and even Marina Benipayo, a former beauty queen who we didn’t know can also act well. She is absolutely fine in that scene with Dominic where she tells her son not to marry Empress.

We just wish the movie has given a more proper and satisfying ending. It seems to have ended abruptly after Empress has decided to reconcile with her erring groom. One aspect of the story that is left hanging in the balance concerns Maja’s ward, whose dad suddenly shows up and wants to take boy to the States as his petition to be a migrant has been approved.

It’s a volatile turn of events, but there was no follow up at all about the boy’s reaction on this decision of his dad. But all in all, “Tatay Kong Sexy” is a very enjoyable movie. One of the most entertaining local films we’ve seen this year that is a fitting tribute to dads in time for the coming Father’s Day celebration.

KC Concepcion Currently Unlucky In Career, But So Lucky And Blooming When It Comes To Her Love Life

KC CONCEPCION’s showbiz career is practically non-existent right now as she has not been given any new regular TV show or movie for more than two years. But at least, she’s very happy with her love life and this appears to be enough compensation for her. Her romance with Azkals athlete Aly Borromeo is all over the internet as they generously share and post their sweet pictures together on social media.

When interviewed on TV about her current love life, KC proclaims: “Ang masasabi ko lang is, God’s timing is perfect. What we have is still super fresh at sana, ayokong masyadong pag-usapan kasi hindi naman showbiz si Aly.”

So she wants to keep their romance a secret? “Iba naman ang secret sa private. Hindi naman secret na may ganyang lalaki sa buhay ko right now, but I really want to keep it private this time.”

She also kept her affair then with Piolo Pascual private, but when she got hurt, she cried a lot about it on national television. She also tried to keep her affair with Paulo Avelino quite private, but still, it didn’t prosper. Well, we hope she’ll be more successful in her relationship with Mr. Borromeo this time. We’re told even her mom, Sharon Cuneta, approves of her romance with the football player.

More recently, KC rooted for Azkal captain Aly and his team in their fight at the AFC Cup 2016 in Malaysia when she posted in her Instagram account: “35,000 people. Tons of pressure. Two teams. One big heart for football. Let’s go, Captain!!! KayaFC #Philippines vs. Johor Darul Ta’zim #Malaysia #AFCCup2016 #Football.”

Tiyak na mahihirapan ang judges pumili kung which songs ang papanalunin nila.”

Also launched is the 2016 digital album of all the song entries on Spotify and the commemorative special edition book, “PhilPop: Loud, Proud, Ours”, written by Tina Dumlao. Twelvesongwriters are competing for the much-coveted PhilPop 2016 Grand Prize on July 23 at the Kia Theater in Quezon City.

And here are the interpreters, the #composers and the 12 songs that are competing: Nyoy Volante for Jeroel Maranan’s “Sintunado”, A Capella Go and Jimmy Marquez for JC Jose’s “Stars Are Aligned”, Itchyworms for Jazz Nicolas and Wally Acolola’s “Di Na Muli”, Kenjhons for Karl Gaurano and Daryl Reyes’ “Friday Night”, Cookie Chua and Bayang Barrios for Miguel and Paolo Guico’s “Tinatangi”. PhilPop Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan says, “We want to encourage songwriters to churn out original Filipino sound – to remind the world that Filipinos are not just great #singers and #performers, but also great songwriters; that Pinoy Pop deserves a spot on the world stage. This is why the MVP Group supports PhilPop and there’s still a lot of work to be done. We must on and not get discouraged. We should continue writing beautiful lyrics, melodies, harmonies. PhilPop will give our songwriters an opportunity to be heard. We are here to stay.”

Gardo Versoza On Working With Cannes Best Actress Jaclyn Jose As His Wife In New GMA Show 'A1 Ko Sa'Yo'

GARDO VERSOZA now has two regular shows with GMA Network. He is seen nightly as the father of Heart Evangelista in “Juan Happy Love Story”. Starting June 2, he will also be seen Thursday nights in the sexy comedy, “A1 Ko Sa’yo!” as the husband of Jaclyn Jose.

“Maganda ang role ko sa ‘A1’ kasi naturingang marriage counselor ako, pero mismong misis ko, napapabayaan ko at may problema sa’kin pagdating sa sex life namin kasi tigang na tigang na siya sa’kin,” he says. “Tapos, ang isa pang may gusto sa’kin dito, ang gym owner na si Roi Vinzon, na closet queen pala. Abangan nyo kung saan pupunta ang story at anong dahilan kung bakit ayokong galawin si Jaclyn.”

So how is it working with Jaclyn? “Never kaming nagkatrabaho sa movies, but on TV, maraming beses na, last yung ‘More Than Words’ with Janine Gutierrez. Gamay na gamay na namin ang isa’t isa so it’s so easy to work with her. At very happy ako sa pananalo niya as best actress sa Cannes Filmfest. Very deserving siya to win.”

Supporting them in the cast are Solenn Heussaff and Gee Canlas as the models in Jaclyn’s agency, Denise Barbacena as Jaclyn’s daughter, Mara Alberto as her secretary, Sef Cadayona as their photographer and Benjamin Alves and Ervic Vijandre as the resident hunks in Roi’s gym. The special guest star in the pilot episode is Lovi Poe, as a model Jaclyn is grooming to join a beauty pageant but she turns out to be pregnant.
Looks like Gardo is enjoying doing comedy. Even “Juan Happy Love Story” is actually more of a comedy and he seems to be having a good time playing the husband of the domineering Lotlot de Leon in the story.

“Sinabi mo. Breather nga sa’kin ang comedies na ito kasi puro drama ang ginagawa ko, na nakakapagod din, lalo na kapag kontrabida ang role ko na lagi akong galit. Ang it’s so nice to be busy. MWF, taping ko for ‘Juan Happy’, Thursdays naman, dito sa ‘A1 Ko Sa’yo1!’ Nakakapagod pero may time pa ako sa business ko. Don’t miss ‘Juan Happy’ this week kasi dadalhin si Heart ng friends niya sa isang gay bar and she’ll be scandalized. Si Joross Gamboa naman, lalasingin si Dennis tapos papalibutin ng mga seksing babae saka tatawagin si Heart para makita ito. Magagalit si Heart at ayaw nang pakasal kay Dennis.”

He has put up his own food business, cooking ducks or “itik” that he gets from Angono. “Iba-ibang dishes: adobo, kaldereta, even kare-kare. Specialty ko yung pinahigang itik. Ino-order or delivery lang. If you want to order, you can get in touch with me sa Facebook account ko, Cupcake Bikers 143. May nagsa-suggest na magbukas na ako ng restaurant, pero that needs full time supervision, so we’ll see.”
