AMANDLA STERNBERG, FROM “HUNGER GAMES” TO “EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING”

She first gained recognition for her role as Rue in “The Hunger Games,” alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson. Now, teen star Amandla Sternberg stars as Maddy in in Warner Bros. Pictures' new romantic dramaEverything, Everything (in Philippine cinemas June 21, 2017).

Based on the bestselling book of the same name by Nicola Yoon, Everything, Everything tells the unlikely love story of Maddy (Sternberg), a smart, curious and imaginative 18-year-old who due to an illness cannot leave the protection of the hermetically sealed environment within her house, and Olly (Nick Robinson), the boy next door who won’t let that stop them. Gazing through windows and talking only through texts, Maddy and Olly form a deep bond that leads them to risk everything to be together…even if it means losing everything.

Amandla Stenberg is huge fan of the book and the script—adding, “I was immediately drawn to the whimsy and the quirkiness of the story and the real life, tangible emotional aspects of it that I could connect to, especially as a teenager. I also loved that this beautiful and meaningful teen romance movie involved seeing an interracial couple in a completely subliminal way.”

Producer Elysa Dutton notes, “I think this urgency for love really resonates for people, especially at the age these characters are. First love is so exciting, and for Maddy, she’s missed a lot of firsts so she’s not going to miss this. Even though she knows this is potentially a life-threatening decision, there’s no choice for her but to take this risk, to really live.”

Both Sternberg and Robinson enjoyed the process of exploring this unusual and often awkward first love relationship—finding the normalcy within its inherent irregularities.

“I had never met Amandla before this film but I’d heard only great things, so I was really excited to work with her,” Robinson recalls. “She’s just a really cool person and I had a great time getting to know her.”

“Both Amandla and Nick were fantastic,” director Stella Meghie states. “Amandla is just angelic,” she continues. “Like Maddy, she’s intelligent and mature, and also romantic, and she definitely brought those sensibilities to the character. My main goal was to make sure that people would believe these two characters fall in love, and Amandla and Nick really clicked from the start. Their chemistry was just so natural and I think that shows in the film.”

Everything, Everything distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select international territories by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.

COURT LIFTS GARNISHMENT OVER ABS-CBN & SKYCABLE ASSETS

ABS CBN and Sky Cable received an ex-parte writ of attachment and notice of garnishment from the Mandaluyong Regional Trial Court on Thursday, 25 May 2017, in connection with the collection complaint of Solar Entertainment Corporation.

ABS-CBN and Sky Cable immediately filed a motion to lift the attachment and garnishment on the morning of May 29, which the court granted on the same day.

Thus, at this time, there is no effective attachment or garnishment over any asset of ABS-CBN or Sky Cable.

In 2014, ABS-CBN and Solar jointly entered into a license agreement with NBA Properties Inc. Since ABS-CBN was paying 60 percent of the license fees, it considered that the same already covered the carriage fees of Sky Cable. Unfortunately, Solar disagreed. Despite the good faith attempts of ABS-CBN and Sky Cable to resolve the dispute amicably, Solar cut off the NBA feed to Sky Cable and filed this complaint.

We will submit our answer with counterclaims to this complaint.

We are confident we will prevail.

Dear Other Self Movie Review: Jodi Santamaria Is Wasted In This Boring Film With Two Stories That Do Not Really Go Anywhere

AS A DIRECTOR, we like Veronica Velasco’s hilarious absurdist comedy, “Last Supper No. 3”, and the fairly touching drama, “Inang Yaya”. She was not as successful in “I Do” and “Tuhog” and the same can be said about her latest effort, “Dear Other Self”, which is reminiscent of “Sliding Doors” starring Gwyneth Paltrow where the story flits back and forth between two alternate realities.

In “Dear Other Self”, Jodi Santamaria is Becky Macadaeg, a young woman who acts as their family’s breadwinner shouldering all their bills. She is tired of her work in an ad agency and wants to just resign. She dreams of being a blogger who’ll travel the world so she can experience winter and wear boots.

The film then cuts back and forth from two different scenarios. In one story, she doesn’t resign but stays home, finding romance in the straight-laced Cris (Joseph Marco) who’s so hostile and “sungit” in one moment then suddenly becomes all sweetness and light in the next.

In the alternate “what if” story, she goes to Thailand and finds romance in the vagabond Henry (Xian Lim), with whom she has supposedly cute scenes like a pillow fight and a water gun fight with street kids. But how can she call herself a travel blogger when all the place she visited is Thailand (which looks so dull without a visit to the sinful Phat Phong)?

Jodi gets to sport different haircuts in the film, which helps us to distinguish between the two stories which are about the choices we make in life. But the fact that it later becomes difficult to differentiate which one is real and which one is imagined makes it difficult for the viewer to relate with any of them.

The film poses the question: which is better, to stay home and fulfill your duties to your family, or follow your dreams and responsibilities as an obedient daughter be damned. In the end, it doesn’t offer any answers because Jodi as the main protagonist has the obligatory happy ending and gets the two different guys in both stories.

Honestly, we don’t get to sympathize with Jodi’s character at all and the gimmicky plot device using two stories, that is the film’s main comeon, becomes a mere cinematic contrivance that proves to offer no concrete satisfaction at all. It’s just like Jodi wants to have her cake and she is able to eat it, too.

The movie offers two narratives in one, so it must be interesting viewing, but the truth is it feels like you’re in Dullsville as the boringga factor is so strong in both stories that don’t really go anywhere life-changing or offer anything new at all. You don’t even get to know in the end whether Jodi did make a right decision and is it the right decision? And the even sadder part is that we really don’t care, we just don’t give a damn.

Jodi is her usual perky self as Becky but she’s actually wasted in this project as even her inherently winsome charisma is not enough to save the save the shortcomings of the clumsy script. Her leading men lend some good presence but sorry to say that they just do not have much gracious chemistry with Jodi, who seems to fare better with leading men who are older and not younger than her. All in all, you’d wish you also had a dear other self and you’re watching another movie instead.

Martin Del Rosario Doesn't Mind Even If He's A Last Minute Inclusion In The Cast Of 'Mulawin Vs. Ravena'

MARTIN DEL ROSARIO is not included in the trailer of “Mulawin Vs. Ravena” but he showed up at the presscon and helps in promoting this new telefantasya on the Kapuso Network. “Wala ako sa trailer kasi biglaan lang ang pagkakasama ko rito,” he says. “Akala ko nga, after I did ‘Pinulot Ka Lang sa Lupa’, matatagalan bago ako mabigyan ng bagong project but then, they suddenly called me na isasama raw ako sa ‘Mulawin Vs. Ravena’ as Aramis.”

And he said yes right away? “Of course, ang laking project nito, so kahit bigla lang akong ipinasok, it’s an honor to be part of it. I play Aramis, anak ni Angelu de Leon. I’m half mortal-half encantado and I will fall in love with Alwina.”

He got to work with Kylie Padilla in “Buena Familia” two years ago. What can he say now that she’s infanticipating? “We became good friends while doing the show and I’m really happy for her. We bumped into each other in a recent event, opening ng isang sushi bar owned by a mutual friend, and she looks so happy so I congratulated her.”

Is he happy moving to GMA-7 after being a Kapamilya? “Oh yes, happy ako sa GMA. Sunod-sunod naman ang shows ko and, in between them, suki rin akong mag-guest sa ‘Magpakailanman’, ‘Maynila’, ‘Karelasyon’, ‘Wagas’ and their other drama shows, so I have no complaints.”

Sanya Lopez Gets Biggest Break As The Solo Lead Star Of GMA-7's 'Haplos' Opposite Rocco Nacino

SANYA LOPEZ feels so lucky and blessed that after being just one of the leads in “Encantadia”, she is now given a solo-starrer in “Haplos”, which will be replacing “D’Originals” in GMA-7’s Afternoon Prime. “I was really surprised when I was informed na may follow up project agad ako at kaming dalawa ng Rocco Nacino ang lead stars,” she says. “I owe it all to Direk Mark Reyes who got me to be one of the Sanggres in ‘Encantadia’. Doon talaga ako napansin ng viewers at nakilala. Before, hardly anyone notices me. Pero ngayon, kahit saan ako magpunta, kilala ako as Danaya dahil sa ‘Encantadia’. Hanggang sa Canada where I had a recent trip with Rocco, Danaya ang tawag nila sa akin.”

She was born Shaira Lenn Roberto on August 5, 1996. It’s her Kuya Jak Roberto who inspired him to try joining showbiz. “Siya ang naunang lumabas sa show ng late Kuya Germs’ na ‘Walang Tulugan’. One time, sinamahan ko siya and I was asked if I want to join the show kaya napasama na rin ako roon.”

How close are they as brother and sister? “Very close. Bata pa kami when our dad passed. He was 5 and I was 2 years old lang. Talagang mahirap ang pinagdaanan namin. Early on, tumulong kami sa mother namin to earn a living. Kaya ngayong pareho na kaming kumikita on our own, gusto naming ibili ng sarili naming bahay ang mama namin kasi nagre-rent lang kami ngayon. Noon, pag lumalabas kami ni Kuya, akala ng mga tao, mag-boyfriend-girlfriend kami. But dahil sa exposure namin sa showbiz, alam na nilang magkapatid kami.”

So what’s the real score between her and Rocco Nacino? “I owe Rocco a lot kasi tinulungan niya talaga ako while we were doing ‘Encantadia’. He knows I’m a newcomer so inalalayan niya ako sa mga eksena namin. Right now, we’re really good friends and I’m so happy na siya uli ang makakasama ko sa first solo soap namin, ito ngang ‘Haplos’. Sana naman, suportahan kami ng mga tao.”

H'WOOD WALK OF FAME HONORS “TRANSFORMERS” DIRECTOR MICHAEL BAY

Michael Bay received one of the highest honours in Hollywood: his handprints in the Walk of Fame.

Bay sank his hands and feet into the forecourt of Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre recently as he was honored for a money-spinning movie career that has netted almost $6 billion.

The 52-year-old Los Angeles native is known for directing some of history’s biggest effects-laden blockbusters, from “Bad Boys” (1995), “Armageddon” (1998) and “Pearl Harbor” (2001) to the “Transformers” franchise, whose fifth installment, “Transformers: The Last Knight” opens in the US and the Philippines on June 21, 2017.

“It brings back your childhood because I remember as a kid I came here. And this is where I went to the movies with my parents, this was the place where I saw ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark,’ when I decided I want to become a director,” he told Agence France Presse.

Bay, who now calls Miami home, worked as an intern for George Lucas’s special effects company Industrial Light and Magic before kickstarting his directing career with commercials and music videos for Tina Turner, Lionel Richie and Meat Loaf.

His first feature film — “Bad Boys,” starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence — marked the beginning of a string of collaborations between Bay and veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

“It’s bizarre as a kid to think, this was always untouchable to me, you know,” he said of being honored by Hollywood.

“You don’t ever think that’s possible, so it’s kind of a bizarre thing having your hands printed here.”

Known for high octane action, Bay’s movies have made $5.8 billion, allowing him to indulge a passion for aviation and motoring, according to Rolling Stone magazine, snapping up a $50 million Gulfstream jet and a fleet of luxury and sports cars.

Transformers: The Last Knight is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

THE UNDEAD AND HER PREY: MEET “THE MUMMY” CHARACTERS

A badass female mummy, a down-on-his-his-luck soldier of fortune and engimatic doctor lead the mysterious characters in Universal Pictures' new action-adventure The Mummy (in Philippine cinemas on June 7. 2017).

Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) is a soldier of fortune who plunders conflict sites for timeless artifacts…ones he sells to the highest bidder. When Nick and his No. 2 (Chris Vail) are attacked by insurgents in the Middle East, in the ensuing battle, they accidentally unearth a tomb of an Egyptian pharaoh they come to know as Ahmanet. Nick is not simply the one responsible for setting Ahmanet free, he’s fulfilling an ordained destiny he couldn’t have possibly imagined. Now, he is the only one who can stop her ascension to a global ruler who will enslave humanity.

Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella). Centuries ago, Ahmanet was raised as a fearless warrior and heir to her father’s throne. She was destined to be the first female pharaoh, but when the king finally fathered a son, Ahmanet was cast aside. Driven mad by betrayal, she was entombed for eternity by the very people who swore loyalty to her. Her fate? Erasure from history. Accidentally awoken by Nick Morton, this original and extraordinarily powerful monster sets out to reclaim her stolen kingdom and ascend to her rightful place as pharaoh. With her evolving powers, the strange and seductive Ahmanet forges an unbreakable connection with Nick, and in so doing, intertwines their destinies.

Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis) is a British officer of Cultural Heritage, who is enlisted by Nick to unearth the sarcophagus for transport. The Egyptologist’s own mother was long certain that there was a female pharaoh who’d been erased from history. Now, Jenny has finally found the princess she heard of only in myth and legend. When Jenny, Nick and Vail rappel down to an antechamber unearthed by human war, they unleash Princess Ahmanet, accidentally setting off a series of otherworldly phenomena.

The enigmatic Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe) oversees Prodigium, a secret organization with a mandate to recognize, examine, contain and destroy evil in our world. A scholarly English gentlemen grounded in the modern day, he not only protects the world from monsters, he protects monsters from the world. Is Jekyll a friend or foe? Like all our principal characters, it depends upon your perspective, and their end game…

Chris Vail (Jake Johnson). Although Vail likes to think of himself as a “liberator of precious antiques,” others prefer the term “modern-day grave robber.” While Nick is into the adventure as much as he is the adrenaline rush, Vail has no qualms about admitting he’s only in it for the money. Vail and Nick have been partners in crime for years, but nothing could prepare them for the evil they have awakened.

Col. Greenway (Courtney B. Vance). A career military man tasked with ensuring U.S. military operations in the Middle East go by the book, Greenway embodies “steadfast.” When he discovers the chaos Nick and Vail have caused, he hauls them in for questioning. Once Ahmanet rises, however, the colonel—and all of humanity—must rely on Nick as he leads our struggle for survival.

The Mummy is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

Joining Gadot in the international cast are Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Connie Nielsen, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner, Lucy Davis, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Eugene Brave Rock and Saïd Taghmaoui.

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, raised on a sheltered island paradise and trained to be an unconquerable warrior. When an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Patty Jenkins directed the film from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg, story by Zack Snyder & Allan Heinberg and Jason Fuchs, based on characters from DC. Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston.

“Diana is set apart from most comic book superheroes by her gender, but it’s her approach to justice that I believe really makes her unique,” Gal Gadot claims. “She not only wants to rid the world of evil by taking out the bad guys, she also wants to encourage men and women to be the best human beings they can be, and she does this through love, hope and grace.”

Patty Jenkins agrees, further stating, “If only we could all see the world the way Diana does. She sees the great darkness, but also looks beyond that to what mankind is capable of: great beauty. She also has the powers of a god, a heart filled with compassion, and we wanted to give her a rich and layered and fun story to tell that everyone can connect with. It’s just a great adventure that I hope fans—old and new—will love!”

Opening across the Philippines on Thursday, June 01, “Wonder Woman” is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Marc Abaya Getting Raves As The Rapist Of Janine Gutierrez In 'Legally Blind'. Is He Currently On With Alessandra De Rossi?

THOSE WHO WATCH “Legally Blind” regularly all rave about how good an actor Marc Abaya is as he’s very effective in his role as the manipulative William, the evil contravida who raped and continues to harass his own brother’s girlfriend, Janine Gutierrez as Grace.

“Kahit nakakabuwisit ang character niya, ang dami talagang pumupuri sa kanya,” says the show’s director, Ricky Davao. “May mga babae ngang lumalapit sa akin, sabi, Direk, ipakilala mo naman kami kay Marc Abaya. Sabi ko, bakit? Ang sagot ba naman, magpapa-rape kami.”

“Legally Blind” is on its last couple of weeks, to be replaced on June 19 by “Impostora”, so Marc’s evil deeds will soon be exposed. Wonder what will be the final judgment on him and what kind of comeuppance he will be getting for causing so much suffering in the lives of the other characters.
Incidentally, we saw Marc looking cozy with Alessandra de Rossi at the final tribute to the late Director Gil Portes. Are they playing beautiful music right now?

Arci Munoz & Gerald Anderson Reunited & Can Relate With Their Roles As Exes Who Want To Be Friends In 'Can We Still Be Friends?'

ARCI MUNOZ and Gerald Anderson had a hit romcom when they did “Always Be My Maybe” with Director Dan Villegas, so it’s not surprising that they are paired anew in Star Cinema’s latest offering, “Can We Still Be Friends?”. The movie is directed by the neophyte filmmaker Prime Cruz directing his first mainstream project for a top film company after debuting in his award-winning hit indie film, “Sleepless”.

As the title indicates, the new flick is about two ex-sweethearts, Gerald as Digs and Arci as Sam, who are trying their best to still be friends even after their breakup. In real life, both Arci and Gerald have experienced breaking up with their past relationships. So can they now relate to the characters that they play in the movie and do they think that being friends again is still possible in real life? “I can most certainly relate to it,” says Arci who just called it quits from her rocker BF, Badi del Rosario aka Bones Frankenstein. “Pero mahirap kung may feelings ka pa rin, e. Like me, nasa moving on stage pa lang ako, so hindi ko siguro kayang makipag-friends agad. I believe you could eventually be friends kung love mo pa rin nga siya, or never mo talaga siyang minahal.”

“Dati, ganun din ang paniwala ko,” says Gerald. “Mahirap maging friends kayo uli, but right now, I think, puede naman pala.”

As we all know, Gerald is currently being seen in a new morning soap, “Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin”, with a former girlfriend, Kim Chiu, and they seem to be doing pretty okay. Will they invite their exes at the premiere night of “Can We Still Be Friends?” “No, ako, hindi ko pa kaya,” says Arci.

As for Gerald, this would be quite a problem. Aside from Kim, he was also linked before with Sarah Geronimo, Maja Salvador and even his current “nakabalikan” GF, Bea Alonzo, was also once his ex. Let’s see if he would invite all of them to watch “Can We Still Be Friends?” with him when it opens in theaters on June 14.

Eat Bulaga' Needs New Blood For Their Lineup Of Hosts. Maine Mendoza's Rumored Romance With Sef Cadayona Questioned By Fans

‘EAT BULAGA’ needs new blood, especially now that two of their hosts are preggy, Pia Guanio and Pauleen Luna. They need a new love team now that the AlDub noontime attraction has peaked. They can tap any of the younger guys at the Kapuso network, like Derrick Monasterio or Ruru Madrid or Kristoffer Martin, all of whom are potential new heartthrobs who can sing and dance well. Then find a new Maine character to be paired with any of them to create a new love team that will attract the fans anew.

Meanwhile, now that “Destined to Be Yours” has ended, the talks linking Maine to Sef Cadayona get louder than ever. This started some months ago but Maine denied it. It came up again after Maine posted photos of her videoke singing session with her good friends Juancho Trivino and Sheena Halili, her co-stars in “Destined” that AlDub fans say are obviously taken at the home of Sef Cadayona in Paranaque.

Sef himself is not in the photos but the fans quickly concluded that it’s the house of the young comedian as seen in “Dream Home” of GMA last year. But naturally, fans loyal to the AlDub love team quickly questioned and bashed Maine, calling her “malandi”. Writers we’ve talked to about this surmise that there must really something more than meets the eye in the relationship of Maine and Sef.

In fairness to Sef, he is very quiet and oh so secretive about it, just like the time when he was rumored to be on with Andrea Torres. It’s Maine who seems to be more careless. Wonder how she will defend herself this time, especially now that she is about to start making a new movie with Alden Richards.

If it would be proven that she’s actually on with Sef off cam and not with Alden, no doubt that would hurt her tandem with Alden and the movie that they are about to shoot on location abroad. Maine was the special guest at Alden’s hit “Upsurge” concert at Kia Theatre last Saturday. And judging from the wild reception of their fans when they did their sexy dance number, it’s pretty obvious that AlDub diehards still ardently support their tandem. Now that they no longer have a primetime show, expect to see more of them in “Eat Bulaga” at lunchtime.
