CHARO SANTOS-CONCIO’S BOOK “MY JOURNEY: THE STORY OF AN UNEXPECTED LEADER,” NOW A CERTIFIED BESTSELLER

The memoir-leadership manual of ABS-CBN’s chief content officer Charo Santos-Concio, entitled “My Journey: The Story of an Unexpected Leader,” has won over readers, topping the list of Powerbooks’ non-fiction bestsellers among Philippine publications for the month of May.

The master storyteller on television with the longest running drama anthology “MMK” has now made her mark as a notable storyteller in print through her book which spans her childhood up to her retirement as president and CEO of ABS-CBN.

Charo recalls her journey to the top, sharing lessons that have been vital in her journey. “I never really planned out my life the way it unfolded. I was just really open to the opportunities that came my way. One can be full of self-doubts and fears, and I had to grapple with them. It allowed me to connect the dots and gave me a chance to be kind to myself and learn from my mistakes.”

An Mercado Alcantara joined Charo as co-writer of the book, revealing that the latter was hesitant at first, but was encouraged to pursue this project to help others. “If by telling her story, it will encourage others to dream and to follow their passion, she said she’s willing to do it.”

According to Charo, “many parts of my story would resonate with everyone -- men and women who are aspiring for greater dreams for themselves.”

Each chapter has a summary at the end, highlighting the leadership lessons she gained from various parts of her life, and the values she espoused as she went through challenging trials in her career.

The bestselling bio-manual for leadership success published by ABS-CBN Publishing is now on its third round of printing. Grab a copy of “My Journey: The Story of an Unexpected Leader” available at selected Powerbooks, Fully Booked, and National Book Store outlets for P550.

TV5 Airs The Most Exciting Action-Adventure TV Series From Hollywood Like 'The Flash', 'Arrow', 'Agents Of Shield', 'Quantico'

AS OF NOW, TV5 has very few local shows. Their most prominent local programs currently are “Lakbai”, a travel show hosted by Baste Duterte; “Brillante Mendoza Presents”, a monthly movie with a different theme each month from the Cannes award-winning filmmaker; and “Wattpad Presents”, a weekly romance based on Wattpad collection of stories. After they stopped making local soaps, TV5 focused their programming on Hollywood TV shows and they now have the most impressive line up of canned shows. Here are some of them, all action-packed thrillers:

“The Flash” - An action-fantasy about a superhero crimefighter who can move at superhuman speed. The lead character is Barry Allen (played by Grant Gustin), who saw his mother being murdered as a boy. During a thunderstorm, he is struck by lightning and goes into a coma. He wakes up later to discover he has gained superhuman speed and he uses his gifts to fight evildoers.

“Arrow” - Spoiled billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (played by Stephen Amell) goes missing at sea but returns home after many years of being stranded in a remote island where he underwent training to be a vigilante crimefighter using a bow and arrow.

“MARVEL’S Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” - SHIELD stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and LOgistic Division, a fictional peacekeeping and spy agency in the world of superheroes set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU. Its agents must deal with unusual cases and enemies, including Hydra and the Inhumans. It’s led by Clark Gregg as Director Phil Coulson. It also stars Ming Na Wen as Melinda May, ace pilot and weapons expert; Brett Dalton as Hive, a Hydra agent who infiltrates SHIELD; Chloe Bennet as Skye/Quake, an inhuman who is recruited as she can sense earthquakes; Iain de Caestecker as Leo Fitz, a specialist in weapons engineering; Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons, a biochemist who specializes in human alien life forms; Nick Blood as Lance Hunter, a mercenary who joins SHIELD; Adrianne Palicki as Bobbi Morse, an agent of SHIELD who went undercover with Hydra and is Hunter’s ex-wife; and Luke Mitchell as Lincoln Campbell, an inhuman with the power to manipulate electrical charges.

“Quantico” - A drama thriller starring Indian actress Priyanka Chopra (the first South Asian to topbill an American TV series) as Alex Parrish, a new FBI recruit who becomes the prime suspect in a terrorist attack on Grand Central Terminal. It shows her training with other recruits at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia and later, the investigation about the attack where she has to clear her name.

Miguel Tanfelix Proud To Be Part Of A Relevant Show Like 'Mulawin Vs. Ravena' That Fosters Care For Our Environment

MIGUEL TANFELIX is getting good feedback for his intense portrayal of the taong ibon, Pagaspas, in “Mulawin Vs. Ravena”. When he went to Leyte to participate in a tree-planting activity with co-stars Bianca Umali and Derek Monasterio, he was surprised to hear people calling him Pagaspas. “Nakakatuwa dahil it means they’re really watching our show,” he says.

Miguel is also proud to be part of “Mulawin Vs. Ravena” that helps promote the awareness of our environmental concerns. “Maganda ang mensahe ng show tungkol sa pangangalaga sa kalikasan dahil tayo rin ang siyang makikinabang dito. Kaya tuwang-tuwa ako to participate in relevant activities like tree planting dahil kailangang-kailangan ito para mapalitan ang mga naputol na puno sa ating mga gubat at kabundukan.”

Although he’s busy acting, Miguel is not neglecting his studies. He is now a college junior taking up entrepreneurship. “Hindi talaga po ako tumitigil sa pag-aaral kasi alam kong napaka-importante nito sa panahon ngayon where showbiz can be unstable.”

Later on, he wants to put up and manage his own business from the earnings he got in showbiz. “Pero siempre, hindi ko iiwanan ang pag-arte kasi ibang satisfaction din ang nakukuha ko rito. With the Lord’s help and proper time management, nagagawa ko naman pong pagsabayin ang showbiz at pag-aaral, pati na ang pagsama sa out of town shows and projects gaya ng pagpunta namin sa Leyte.”

Angelika De La Cruz Plays New Villain In 'Ika-6 Na Utos' Who Wants To Snatch Mike Tan Away From Sunshine Dizon

ANGELIKA DE LA CRUZ has been added to the cast of GMA-7’s hit afternoon soap, “Ika-6 na Utos” as an added antagonist to Sunshine Dizon’s lead character, Emma. Some folks say the show is now “nakakaumay” and they are tired of watching it because the story is just being stretched and stretched to kingdom come.

But if the majority of viewers share the same view, how come the ratings of the show continue to soar to high heavens, eclipsing the noontime shows that compete with it? As Sunshine Dizon herself proclaims: “The ratings will speak for itself. Kahit may pintas, talagang pinag-uusapan pa rin ang show. And ‘Ika-6 na Utos’ remains to be the number one daytime drama and the only one shown six days a week from Monday to Saturday. We started airing in December and now, after six months, mataas pa rin ang ratings namin.”

Obviously, Angelika is introduced to add spice to the story. She plays Geneva, a new contravida. “I plan sana to go back to acting next year pa kasi mataba pa ako after delivering my second child,” she says. “Also, marami rin akong trabaho as a barangay captain in Malabon. But Sunshine herself called me to offer me the role at parang reunion namin since ‘Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin’ days namin. So I’m back to work na. Kontrabida rito si Geneva at pahihirapan ko si Sunshine as Emma kaya I’m sure the viewers will hate me. It’s quite challenging and I’m glad I accepted to do it.”

It is said that if regular viewers of “Ika-6 na Utos” look at Ryza Cenon as Georgia as a monster, then they will be all the more annoyed and incensed by Angelika as Geneva. “Magmamaldita talaga ako rito at sobrang epal kasi pagnanasaan ko pa si Mike Tan as Angelo kaya guguluhin ko ang relasyon nila ni Sunshine,” she adds. “Marami akong pasabog na eksena, pero nagpapayat talaga ako through being a vegetarian and through exercise kasi nakakahiya naman kung may confrontation scenes kami ni Sunshine dahil pumayat na siya, e. So kailangang mag-level up din ako.”

With Angelika as the new contravida, there’s a rumor that Ryza Cenon’s character as the former sole villainess, Georgia, will eventually be eased out since she has left GMA Artist Center and is now managed by Viva. We’re not sure about this but with Angelika’s Geneva character in the show, it can now have added twists and turns in the plotting and we won’t be surprised if the show gets extended again for the nth time and it will last until December.

CHEF TATUNG’S “PHILIPPINE COOKERY: FROM HEART TO PLATTER” WINS BEST COOKBOOK AWARD

Chef Tatung Sarthou’s ode to Philippine cuisine, “Philippine Cookery: From Heart to Platter” by ABS-CBN Publishing, was named "Best TV Chef Book Outside Europe” by the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards held recently in Yantai, China.

“This is the first book, and certainly not the last of the celebrity chef. It is really good, interesting, useful and practical,” Edouard Cointreau, President of the Jury for the Gourmand Awards, earlier said of Chef Tatung’s book in a 2016 press release.

As one of the Philippines’ most sought after chefs, well known for his passion for Philippine cuisine and his many social and culinary advocacies, Chef Tatung also appears on the cooking segment of the ABS-CBN morning show “Umagang Kay Ganda” and was the host of the Lifestyle TV special “The Food That We Are.”

In “Philippine Cookery: From Heart to Platter,” Chef Tatung delves into the heart of his native cuisine by showing how to cook Filipino through ten fascinating chapters. He teaches basic cooking methods—steaming, grilling, sautéing, frying, curing, among many techniques—as a way for readers to understand Philippine cuisine’s historical roots, and as a way to learn to cook it at home.

Featured are 71 recipes perfected from Chef Tatung’s many years of research around the country. These include basics like tinolang manokkare-kareadobong pusit, as well as more unusual fare like bulanglangpiyanggang, at pinaupong manok sa asin. Throughout, he explores important ingredients like vinegar, coconut, rice, as well as traditional kitchen tools like the palayok or claypot, and bamboo tubes used for boiling. Chef Tatung frames his book with his own memories of cooking with his mother and grandmother, including a touching anecdote about how adobo saved his family during World War II.

In this book, Chef Tatung believes that in order to cook Filipino, one must cook out of love, honestly and simply, without pretension. With its sleek design by multi-awarded book designer Ige Ramos and captivating photography by Paulo Valenzuela, “Philippine Cookery: From Heart to Platter” is more than just a cookbook. It is a heartfelt guide to helping readers discover their own love for cooking Filipino.

“Philippine Cookery: From Heart to Platter” is available at National Bookstore and FullyBooked branches for PhP595.

Thea Tolentino Plays Another Villain Role As Sanya Lopez' Evil Half Sister In 'Haplos' And Loving It

THEA TOLENTINO is the female winner in GMA-7’s talent reality show, “Protege”, but she’s now more identified in playing contravida roles. “I don’t mind,” she says. “Sabi kasi, mas bagay raw talaga kong nang-aapi kaysa ako yung inaapi. I feel blessed nga na right after ‘Destined to be Yours’ na kontrabida ako kay Maine Mendoza, heto, aapihin ko naman ngayon si Sanya Lopez. In the new Afternoon Prime soap, ‘Haplos’, ako ang half sister niyang si Lucille, who practices black magic kasama ang ina ko played by Francine Prieto. Ang importante, tuloy-tuloy ang trabaho ko at hindi ako naze-zero. Kaysa naman nganga ka lang sa bahay, di ba? Happy rin akong suportahan si Sanya kasi friends na kami mula nang magkasama kami sa ‘The Half Sisters’.”

About her lovelife, Thea is very open in admitting that she’s in a relationship with “Protege” batchmate Mikoy Morales. They’ve been together for four years now. “We never hid it naman. Lumalabas nga kami nang magkasama, okay lang.”

Mikoy is currently playing the gay Roxy in “Pepito Manaloto” and he also does gay parts in ‘Bubble Gang”, in “D ‘Originals” and in a gay movie, “Four Days”, with Sebastian Castro who is out in the open. Isn’t she worried that Mikoy might be too identified with gay roles?
“Okay lang yun. He’s just playing a role naman. Pero siempre, hindi maiiwasan, may mga namba-bash sa kanya. Sabi ko, huwag niya na lang patulan. Hindi naman mawawala yung hecklers na natutuwa talaga kapag nakakapang-inis sila ng mga artista.”

Can We Still Be Friends Movie Review: Gerald Anderson & Arci Munoz Deserve A Better Movie

WE’RE NOT SURPRISED that the second screen outing of Gerald Anderson and Arci Munoz, “Can We Still Be Friends”, is not as big a hit at the box office as their first one, “Always Be My Maybe”. They played relatable, very endearing characters in their first film directed by Dan Villegas. In the second film helmed by Prime Cruz, they played off-putting losers we just simply cannot sympathize with. It cannot even be called a rom-com since it simply failed to make audiences laugh.

She says she’s been hanging on to him for eight long years hoping he’d change for the better. Well, she’s such a patient martyr, isn’t she? He’s always late in picking her up, he can’t even help her in cleaning up the condo unit that they co-own and he puts back empty pitchers of drinking water to the fridge instead of refilling them.

These are very valid issues. And she lets this go on for eight long years? Doesn’t she know you can only change a man when he’s still in his diapers? He’s a fucking asshole and she’s a fucking doormat. And she’s such a big bimbo as she later on regrets her own decisions and seeks reconciliation with him because she has realized how much she loves him despite his being a douchebag and it was really wrong to break up with him.

So how can you relate with these idiotic characters? When they break up, you don’t even feel sorry for them. To pad the running time, Arci meets a boring doctor, Trevor (Brian Santos), on Tinder and dates him. Gerald also meets another flirty girl, Cindy (Ria Atayde), who even lives with him but it’s not really clear if he’s really into her or he’s just coasting along.

Arci meets Ria with Gerald by accident in a supermarket and later sees Ria in Gerald’s apartment when she drops in unannounced, but you can’t even feel any tension between them. As for Gerald, he doesn’t even really seem heartbroken or miserable at all about breaking up with her dumb and gullible live in partner. And you don’t blame him.

You don’t really feel thrilled or excited about him and Arci at all. At some point, you just lose your interest in what’s going on and don’t care anymore whatever would happen to them. When Arci pretends she choked on her food while eating, you wish she’d really die so the movie would end quickly. Can they still be friends? Who the hell cares? We ourselves wouldn’t want to be friends with them as we’re just so bored to death after watching their senseless shenanigans for a while.

We’re surprised that the Star Cinema executive committee did not interfere in the completion of this movie when they would demand reshoots in most cases, like in “The Unmarried Wife” and the new John Lloyd-Sarah Geronimo movie. The script of “Can We Still” seriously needs a lot of rewriting for it to be entertaining like past Star Cinema romcoms.

It’s just too bad for Gerald and Arci because they both register charmingly on screen and have pretty likeable chemistry. They certainly deserve a better material. Here, they’re both eclipsed by their gay character friend who delivered a kilometric aria as his wedding vow to summarize what they probably think is the point of the whole movie: that we should all embrace our partner’s imperfections.

The millennial treatment of scriptwriter Jen Chuaunsu and director Prime Cruz, who started with indie films, is seen in many elements, like the couple living together without the benefit of marriage, the dating app Tinder (but it’s surprising that Arci doesn’t know about Tinder at all when she works in an ad agency) and the same sex marriage between Markki Stroem and Gege Severo that will probably please the LGBT community. But alas, such contemporary flavors are not enough to make a good movie and they have yet a lot to learn in making witty, winning, truly crowd-pleasing mainstream romances.
