Starstruck Reject Dave Bornea Now Busier Than Those Made It As Finalists In The GMA Talent Search

DAVE BORNEA first tried to join showbiz as a contestant in “Eat Bulaga” when he was 16 but failed to make it. At 18, he joined Starstruck but also didn’t make it to the final 14. But now, he’s actually busier than those who made it as finalist after GMA Artist Center signed him up as a regular talent.

He became part of the boyband One Up that sings regularly in “Celebrity Bluff” and he was given a big role as Julian, the nephew of the villain, Cherie Gil, in “Alyas Robin Hood, Book 1”. After that, he did “Meant to Be” and now, he’s in “Alyas Robin Hood, Book 2”, reprising his role as Julian and once again paired with Lindsay de Vera as Lizzy, the sister of title-roler Dingdong Dantes.

The eldest of three kids, his family is based in Talisay, Cebu and he’s now living alone in a condo in Quezon City. He was taking up Hotel & Restaurant Management in the University of Cebu and was already in 3rd year when he joined showbiz. “I stopped po going to school muna kasi sayang naman ang career opportunities na dumarating sa akin ngayon. As of now, nakakatulong pa akong magpaaral sa dalawang kapatid ko sa Cebu.”

His love team with Lindsay now has its own following. Are they really on even off cam? “Hindi po. We’re just close friends. Kasi sa workshops pa lang ng GMA, magkasama na kami, so kilala na namin ang isa’t isa. She’s only 17 and we’re both aware na career muna dapat ang priority namin. Happy kami na kasama uli kami sa Book 2 na ‘Alyas Robin Hood’ and we’ve started taping for the show’s new season already. Mas ma-action daw ito, according to our director, Dominic Zapata, so I’m hoping mabigyan din ako ng action scenes dito kasi gusto ko ring maging action star.”

Jake Cuenca Finds New Fulfillment Producing A Movie For The First Time, The Cinemalaya Entry, 'Requited', Where He Also Plays The Lead Role

JAKE CUENCA adds a new dimension to his showbiz career as producer of the Cinemalaya entry, “Requited”, written and directed by Nerissa Picadizo. What prompts him to produce the film? “I met Direk Nerissa sa Ani ng Dangal Awards where we were both honored for winning in film festivals abroad,” he says. “She gave me the script of ‘Requited’ and I fell in love with it right away. Then it was accepted at Cinemalaya and got a grant of P750,000. I agreed to do it, waived my talent fee and also helped in financing the post production.”

What if he wouldn’t be able to get back his investment? “This is a passion project for me. We have intentions of giving it a wide release later. I think it has a good chance at the box office because it’s so charming, so easy to standard and unlike other indie films na mag-iisip ka pa ng malalim. When I saw the finished film, napaiyak ako sa ganda. It’s very fulfilling for me as a producer and as an actor to be part of this film we all can be proud of.”

What’s the film about? “This is basically a love story between Matt, played by me, and Anna Luna as Sandy. At the start of the story, Sandy has broken up with Matt and he’s masungit. He has Parkinson’s disease and his wish is to ride a bicycle from Manila to Mt. Pinatubo in Zambales, so sinamahan siya ni Sandy. Two characters lang sila but so relatable that you will really root and cheer for them. You’ll hope na magkabalikan sila. The whole film is not only a journey nung bike trip nila, but also it’s a journey of their relationship. The ending is so unpredictable. ‘Requited’ ang title because it’s about unfinished business and blurred lines in a relationship. Enjoy ako sa role ko kasi it’s not so me in real life. Pagdating pa lang sa set, in character na ako as sobrang sungit, but bilib talaga ako kay Anna kasi ilang beses niya akong napatawa. We got her after she auditioned and we felt she’s really the one who’s right for the role. Ang husay niya and we’re all impressed.”

Being a triathlete helped him in the biking scenes. “The Pinatubo terrain is one of the hardest ones for bikers. Challenging talaga and you’ll see it in the film. Nahirapan ako kasi I’m also taping the teleserye ‘Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin’ with Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson, so mahirap kasi lagari ako sa taping noon at sa shoot ng movie. But when you love what you’re doing, nothing is really difficult.”

Just as “Requited” is about to be shown, he’s also starting a new movie, “Ang Panday”, a Metro Filmfest entry where he’ll play Lizardo to Coco Martin’s Flavio. “I know the role has been played before by Max Alvarado, Christopher de Leon and Phillip Salvador, but iibahin ko talaga ito. I’ll come up with my own interpretation and make it my own.”

Coco Martin Now A Certified Godfather To New Actresses Who He Helps To Achieve Stardom

NO DOUBT Coco Martin is now the only top actor who helps boost the career of actresses who gain full stardom after appearing as his leading ladies. No doubt that after being paired with him and being rumored to be his girlfriend, the stock of Julia Montes zoomed up and she starred in her own hit soap, “Doble Kara”. The same for Maja Salvador, after whose appearance in “Ang Probinsyano” was given the afternoon soap “Wildflower”, now a certified hit in the ratings.

Ditto for Bela Padilla after her stint in “Ang Probinsyano”, she starred in “My Dear Heart” then became a producer-writer-actress in the hit flick, “Camp Sawi”, even if her solo romcom “Luck at First Sight” wasn’t that successful at the tills. Now comes Yassi Pressman, whose appearance in “Ang Probinsyano” as Coco’s wife definitely boosted her stock. She now has many endorsements and is now even starring in her solo movie, “Ang Pambansang Third Wheel”.

For his Metro-Manila Filmfest entry, Coco has chosen an entirely new leading lady, reigning Bb. Pilipinas International Mariel de Leon. Mariel seems an inch or so taller than him but, never mind, since she is a bonafide showbiz royalty being the daughter of respected stars Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong. We have no doubt that Coco will definitely be a big help in jumpstarting Mariel de Leon’s career in local show business.

LILY JAMES, A BURST OF SUNSHINE IN “BABY DRIVER”

In 2015, she played the title role in Disney’s live-action feature Cinderella to wide acclaim. Now, Lily James stars as the title character's love interest in Columbia Pictures’ U.S. No.1 box-office hit Baby Driver (in Philippine cinemas August 02).

In the film, a talented, young getaway driver named Baby (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets Debora (James), the girl of his dreams, Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

Who could bring to life Debora, the kind-eyed, friendly waitress who gives Baby hope that his life could mean something more? Writer-director Edgar Wright found her in British actress Lily James.

“I was incredibly charmed by her,” says Wright. “She basically did in the audition what she does in the movie. She inhabits this character, this new ray of light in Baby’s reasonably introverted life. I sent the video of her audition to Bill Pope, my cinematographer, whose opinion I really trust, especially on actors and actresses. I didn’t tell him why I was sending it or what I thought of it. Maybe half an hour later he replied with a two-word email saying, ‘Hire her.’”

Says James about her character, “Debora works a dead-end job and it becomes clear that she has no ties to where she is at this point in her life. She has no family and is a bit of a wanderer who wants to escape. She’s a dreamer and she loves music, which is why she and Baby really connect.”

For Lily James, Elgort makes it easy to sympathize with Baby. “You root for Baby because he’s got such a good heart and you see him at home with Joe, his foster dad, and there’s this beautiful relationship. He’s doing this to get a better life for Joe and himself, and so you want him to succeed, and you don’t want him to get totally corrupted in this horrible world. I think he’s got such a big heart and that shines through in Ansel’s performance, which I think is so beautiful and kind of vulnerable but cool.”

Baby Driver stars Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Bernthal, Eiza Gonzalez with Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx.

Baby Driver is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Meet Some Of The Pretty Contestants In 'Eat Bulaga's' Search For Miss Millennial Philippines

SINCE IT’S IMPOSSIBLE for invited writers to interview all the 38 contestants, they’re divided amongst us and those who got to seat in our table are Joanna Marie Abanza, 18, of Apayao; Chelsea Claro, 19, of Nueva Vizcaya; Allyza Molly Teodoro, 22, of Davao City; Berjayneth Chee, 19, of Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental; and Mary Jade Capin, 19, of the new province of Zamboanga Sibugay.

They are all pretty, charming and fairly articulate. They were glad to have the chance to visit Manila, courtesy of EB. Joanna, a college student who studies at the University of Cagayan Valley in Tuguegarao, says Apayao is no longer part of Kalinga like before, but is now a separate province up in the Cordilleras. “We have our own underground river, the Manacota,” she says. “Mas maganda pa sa Palawan kaya lang ang hirap puntahan kasi you have to go through virgin forest. Sa amin din po yung famous Marag Valley.”

Molly from Davao city proper is a college graduate from the University of the Immaculate Conception and is now reviewing for the CPA board exams. She’s a staunch supporter of Pres.Duterte. “I want to help promote the program of good government that he has started,” she says.

Chelsea Claro is from the little known town of Diadi in Nueva Vizcaya. She’s a tourism senior at the University of Baguio and won her title in May this year. “Usually po, ang nananalo sa amin, yung mga galing sa bigger places like Solano and Bayambang kaya proud kami na taga-Diadi ang nanalo this time, malapit po kami sa Bagabag,” she says. “I’m so excited to introduce sa buong bansa all the beautiful spots in our province.”

Berjayneth’s family is originally from Beijing but they now live in Bulua, Cagayan de Oro. She studies at Liceo de Cagayan and is a member of the Models Association of CDO. She’s thrilled to introduce CDO’s newest attractions in EB. Mary Jade is taking up political science in St. Vincent’s College, Dipolog City. She is proud to promote her new province of Zamboanga Sibugay which is in between Zamboanga del Norte and del Sur and famous for its fabulous Merloquet Falls.

'Eat Bulaga' Launches Their New Beauty Pageant, Miss Millennial Philippines 2017, Aimed To Promote The Beauty Of The Country's Various Provinces

‘EAT BULAGA’, the country’s longest running entertainment show at 38 years and counting, has launched the nationwide search for the Miss Millennial Philippines 2017. The 38 finalists were presented to the press, hosted by Ruby Rodriguez and Luane Dy. at Concha’s, Alden Richards’ restaurant near Morato Ave.

“EB” exec Jenni Ferre says the idea entered her mind while watching the last Miss Universe pageant and she’d wonder about the countries of some of the contestants there. “Pero naisip ko, why should I bother about those foreign countries gayong dito mismo sa sarili nating bansa, ang daming probinsiyang hindi ko kilala,” she says. “So why not promote those provinces na hindi alam ng mga mismong kababayan natin. Example, Antique or Apayao, what do they have to offer? Ngayon, nandito ang kanilang respective beauty queens to tell us more about the attractions sa mga lugar nila.”

So how were these local beauty queens able to join? “Unang-una, dapat, millennial ka. Our youngest contestants are 17 years old and the eldest is 24. Tapos, dapat, may korona ka from your own city or province, so we coordinated sa tourism boards ng bawat city and province at sila ang nagpadala sa amin ng representative nila. Wala ritong height requirements, di kailangang naka-long gown ka, but we will require you to be the special ambassadress of your own city or province who’ll promote it with the help of our own crew on EB and on social media.”

Is this the most expensive project they’ve ever had in EB? “Yes, kasi magastos, sa plane fare pa lang ng pagdadala rito sa candidates from far provinces. Wala naman kang ex-deal sa airlines. Then we have to provide accommodations for them sa B Hotel, yung food and transportation nila while they’re here in Manila, at hindi lang sila kundi pati yung kasama nila. While they’re here, pinag-seminar din namin sila on personality development and public speaking. Dapat, mas marami pang contestants kaya lang may conflict sa schedules nung iba at di puede magpunta sa Manila.”

What are the prizes for the winners? “We will have a grand winner sa coronation night in September who’ll get P500,000 cash, a Montero car and a condo unit. Magkakaroon din ng Talent Night, pre-pageant night with special awards at pipiliin yung ten finalists. May special prize din for the Bayanihan Queen na kailangang tulungan ng buo nilang province sa promotion. The winning province will get P1 million and she will get P10,000. We will introduce one candidate and their locality each day. Sa panahong ito, puro negative ang balita, about Marawi, about drugs, about heavy traffic. So ang maganda sa pageant na ito, us viewers will be given the chance to travel around the country while watching ‘Eat Bulaga’. Very positive ito and it will definitely be a big help to domestic tourism as it will make us realize how beautiful our country really is kaya dapat nating mahalin at ipagmalaki.”

Kris Bernal Talks About The Biggest Challenges In Playing Her Dual Roles Of Nimfa & Rosette In The Hit Soap 'Impostora'

KRIS BERNAL can’t help but be amused by the request of some loyal fans of her hit afternoon soap, “Impostora”, for her to make her partnership with leading man Rafael Rosell for real and not just for reel. “Hindi ko akalaing magiging ganun karami ang magkakagusto sa tambalan namin,” she says. “Maraming nagme-message sa aking kinikilig sila sa sweet moments namin sa screen. Okay na okay raw ang chemistry namin, but we all know hanggang screen lang yun kasi taken na si Rafael.”

She admits playing her dual roles as Nimfa and Rosette is proving to be the most demanding thing she has done as an actress. “Kailangan kasi, magkaibang-magkaiba yung dalawang characters na ginagampanan ko. Mukhang mabait at nakakaawa si Nimfa so medyo madali siya for me kasi marami na kong nagawang ganyang characters before. Mas mahirap talaga gawin si Rosette kasi she is so NOT me. Big challenge kasi dapat laging diyosa ng kagandahan ang dating ko sa screen, refined ang galaw, pero very mean and ruthless. So binabago ko ang tone ng boses ko, mas harsh. At nagi-smoke pa ko rito which I don’t do in real life. But I feel satisfied kasi tinatawag akong bitch ng ibang galit na viewers when I’m Rosette, which means nagtatagumpay talaga ako in portraying my role. Sabi ko nga, sige, call me a bitch. I like that.”

New Kapuso Actor Rob Moya Is Open About His Admiration For 'Alyas Robin Hood Book 2' Co-Star Andrea Torres, But Andrea Doesn't Mind Him

ROB MOYA is the son of former Seiko actor Jovit Moya. “Ako po yung bunso,” he says at the special presscon held by GMA-7 for him and other young stars. “I have an older brother and sister. Ten years po kaming hindi nagkita ng father ko kasi nag-abroad siya and stayed in the U.S. But now, he’s back, so nagkita na kami uli. Kalbo na po siya, e. Pero may full beard naman. He now works for a university in New Zealand at pauwi-uwi lang dito.”

Rob was introduced in ‘Bubble Gang’ then was included in the primetime soap ‘Juan Happy Love Story’ where he had a good exposure as the best friend of Dennis Trillo. Then he was cast in “Alyas Robin Hood” where he plays a cop, PO4 Alex Cruz, the buddy of Paolo Contis who’s Dingdong Dantes’ brother. He will now repeat the same role in “Alyas Robin Hood, Book 2” and they’ve already started taping.

“Medyo tumaba ako so now, I’m working out every day to keep myself fit. I wake up at 4 AM to run. Nagre-ready na rin akong magpa-sexy kasi may scenes daw na shirtless ako. Mas mahaba raw ang role ko rito sa Book 2 kaysa sa Book 1 so pinaghahandaan ko talaga.”

If he’d be given the chance to do a lead role, what kind of role would it be? “Definitely, yung bida-kontrabida. Kasi yung dating ko raw, hindi ako tipong credible na aapihing bida kasi heavy set ang dating ko,” he laughs.

Who’d he like to be paired with? “Definitely, my dream girl, si Andrea Torres, who’s also in ‘Alyas Robin Hood’.”

Why Andrea? “I find her really attractive. At alam naman niyang crush ko siya, e. I texted her pero hindi sumagot.”

Rob is 23 years old and is taking up culinary arts in Enderun College. “Pero na-stop when I joined showbiz.”

He has no girlfriend as of now. “I’ve had six girlfriends na, but now, I don’t want to be distracted. I really want to focus muna on my career.”
