VICE GANDA SEES GOLD IN SPIRAL POLE DANCING ACT IN “PILIPINAS GOT TALENT”

A 32-year old spiral pole dancer and single mom is going straight to the semi-finals of ABS-CBN’s hit world class talent search “Pilipinas Got Talent” after judge Vice Ganda chose her as his golden buzzer act this season.

Kristel De Catalina of Antipolo wowed judges as she gracefully interpreted the song “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical “Les Miserables” and danced on a rotating spiral pole suspended in midair. The performance was so moving that it even ‘healed’ Vice,’ who was sick while doing the shoot.

“You are a very powerful performer. You were so good that you were able to heal me. It’s not just a dance for me, I think it’s full of symbolism. I saw your story there as a mother. You’ve struggled all the way to the top just for your son,” Vice explained.

“You talent, your act, your performance, your message, your inspiration for me deserves…” Vice continued before finally pressing the Golden Buzzer.

Kristel was very elated with the unexpected turnout of her first audition on national television.

“I can’t believe it because this is the first time I joined a competition on national TV. Normally people are not aware that I join or win international competitions. Through PGT, more Pinoys now know what I can do,” said Kristel.

Only one act can get the coveted Golden Buzzer in the coming weeks and it will be picked by hosts Billy Crawford and Toni Gonzaga.

Don’t miss the sixth season of “Pilipinas Got Talent,” Saturdays, 7 PM and Sundays, 7:30 PM on ABS-CBN. For updates, follow @abscbnpgt on Instagram and Twitter or like www.facebook.com/pilipinasgottalent.PGT on Facebook.

JESSA ZARAGOZA REMAKES “IKAKASAL KA NA”

The Phenomenal Diva Jessa Zaragoza finally made the much-awaited remake of her hit song, the heartbreaking “Ikakasal Ka Na,” which was recently launched digitally in a worldwide release as her first major offering under Star Music this year.

“When I first sang ‘Ikakasal Ka Na,” I just sang it because it was beautiful. But now, when I sang this new version, I gave it my heart and soul,” revealed Jessa.

With fresh, new arreglo, the OPM hitmaker’s “Ikakasal Ka Na” was also launched on air through MOR 101.9. Its original version was included in Jessa’s 2000 album entitled “Ibigay Mo Na,” with words and music by Alex Catedrilla.

Star Music’s audio content head, Jonathan Manalo, led the song’s main vocal arrangement and over-all music production. He shared that since Jessa is celebrating her 20th anniversary in the industry simultaneous with the 30th showbiz anniversary of her husband Dingdong Avanzado, now is the perfect time to revisit some of her biggest OPM hits.

“What a great time to celebrate Jessa’s (and Dingdong’s) legacy. We wanted to revisit their hits that made them OPM legends,” he said.

Jonathan also revealed that Jessa’s experience and feelings will be more felt in the remake single. “You will hear in the latest version what Jessa is today, with more depth, artistry on her song interpretation,” he added.

The revival version of “Ikakasal Ka Na” is arranged by Paulo Zarate, mixed and mastered by Boggie Manipon, and with violins by Jerome Nuñez.

This latest single is now available for download in leading digital stores. It is also part of Jessa’s “20/30 Commemorative Anniversary Album” with Dingdong, launched recently.

BIGGER SKYATHON GOES BACK TO BORACAY

SKYathon Beach Run is back and bigger on its ninth year with the opening of participation to international runners as it aims for greater awareness to raise funds that would help rehabilitate the reefs of Boracay.

Organizers of the first destination run in the country are excited with this development. “Among the avid participants of the race are foreigners vacationing in the island. To open this to international delegates will elevate the race not just to a fun run but a race that the running communities around the world will look forward to each year,” said Mr. Delbert Santos, a senior marketing manager from SKY.

Set to happen on April 21 at Epic Boracay, it features three categories for runners to choose from; 3K, 5K, and 10K.

SKY plays its part in protecting nature by supporting this initiative. A portion of the proceeds from SKYathon will go to the coral reef rehabilitation program. Other than reef rehabilitation there is also a mangrove planting partnership with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in the area.

This year SKYathon introduces #LoveBoracay, a call for a turn towards responsible tourism.

Santos said that with the current environmental troubles facing not only the island but also some major tourist spots in the country it’s important for vacationers to keep in mind preserving these natural resources. He said, “This year, besides pushing for the rehabilitation of the coral reefs in Boracay, we’d also like to send out a call to all tourists to take care of the places they are going to. We have to practice responsible tourism so that we can keep the beauty of nature not just for us but most especially for future generations.”

Also back this year is Coach Rio de la Cruz’ RunRio, which will organize event.

“Since it is RUNRIO’s 4th year in participating the SKYathon run, I am glad that we still continue to organize events like this in Boracay island each year. I believe that because of this event we are not only promoting an active and healthy lifestyle to the people, but also saving Boracay island itself,’ said Rio de la Cruz.

Registration is ongoing and can be done online through www.runrio.com or onsite via selected branches of registration partners Rudy Project, Chris Sports, and Olympic Village. The Boracay Foundation Inc. Secretariat in Boracay can also accept registrations.

ROSE BYRNE, A WARM-HEARTED ANIMAL LOVER IN “PETER RABBIT”

Best known for her role as Ellen Parsons in TV’s Damages, which earned her one Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations, Rose Byrne now stars in Sony Pictures Animation's Peter Rabbit, the new family comedy based on Beatrix Potter’s beloved characters.

In Peter Rabbit, the mischievous and adventurous hero who has captivated generations of readers now takes on the starring role of his own contemporary comedy. In the film, Peter’s feud with Mr. Thomas McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson) escalates to greater heights than ever before as their fight to gain control of McGregor’s coveted vegetable garden and the affections of the warm-hearted animal lover, Bea, who lives next door (Rose Byrne) extends to the Lake District and London.

McGregor’s next-door neighbor, Bea, has given up the city life to move to a small cottage to attempt to prove herself as a painter. She feels isolated, save for a set of diminutive, furry friends: the rabbits. Peter is her favorite, and she is his.

Rose Byrne talks about the role. “Bea is stubborn and determined, but she's also torn.  Her talent lies with her animal paintings, not her human portraits, but she doesn't take that form seriously and hence doesn't feel like a true artist,” she says. “The animals are her friends and her family, a bit like Snow White meets Jane Goodall.”

“Director Will Gluck’s ambition was a very modern take on a classic tale, which is hard to do,” Byrne continues.  “It's so beloved so you have to be really tender, but I thought it was genuinely very funny.”

“Rose is luminous,” says producer Jodi Hildebrand.  “She is that person who everyone loves, which was so necessary for our film because Peter loves her, the triplets love her, Benjamin loves her and Thomas McGregor falls in love with her. The audience had to believe the strength of that love, and with Rose they can.”

The challenge for Byrne would come in acting in a film against a lead character that would be animated after photography.  “You have to harness your imaginative powers as much as you can in those scenes,” she explains. “It's incredibly technical, so besides the director, there are so many heads of departments who need to be watching your every movement — visual effects, special effects, camera department, art department. There are so many complicated steps to creating a successful portrayal of the character and her interaction with her screen partners, a lot of moving parts.”

In Philippine cinemas February 28Peter Rabbit is distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

SAOIRSE RONAN, FUNNY AND HEARTBREAKING IN “LADY BIRD”

She earned Academy Award nominations for her exceptional performances in Atonement and Brooklyn.  Now, Saoirse Ronan is up for another Best Actress Oscar for Universal Pictures' Lady Bird which will be shown exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Trinoma, Greenebelt 1) starting February 28.

Directed by Greta Gerwig (herself nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay)Lady Bird also stars Laurie Metcalf (Best Supporting Actress nominee), Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges and Timothée Chalamet.

In Lady Bird, Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter.  Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father (Letts) loses his job.

Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home.

Asked how did she come to cast Ronan and what made her so perfect for the role of Lady Bird, Gerwig shares, “I met with Saoirse at the Toronto Film Festival in 2015 when she was there for Brooklyn. I sat in her hotel room and read the entire script out loud with her. As soon as I heard her say the words, I knew beyond a doubt that she was Lady Bird. It was so different and so much better than I had imagined. She was willful and funny and heartbreaking, both universal and specific. She was going into rehearsals for The Crucible on Broadway, so it meant pushing the film for six months, but there was no other person who could have done it, it was hers two minutes into the read.

Gerwig went on to further develop the character with Ronan.  “The process of creating a character is a collage art,” notes the writer-directorSaoirse was acting on Broadway, and I would feed her little pieces bit by bit. I would give her a novel or a poem or a song or a photograph. As we cast more people, I would gather them for mini-rehearsals. I wanted the actors to start creating a magical bubble of make believe with each other.

As we got deeper into rehearsal before filming, Saoirse and I spent hours talking together and hanging out so that by the time we were shooting, she would be the person I’d ask about what Lady Bird would wear in a particular scene or how she would walk or sit,” Gerwig concludes.  “Saoirse developed an entire physicality around the character that informed the way I wanted to photograph her, the rhythm of the shooting and the emotion.

Lady Bird is distributed in the Philippines by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.  Follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/uipmoviesph/

ANGELICA DEALS WITH PAIN THRU HILARIOUS SENTIMENTS IN “PARA KAY EX” BOOK

The country’s Hugot Queen Angelica Panganiban gives an interesting introduction and acts as muse of the new “Para Kay Ex” book, an exciting guide to moving on by ABS-CBN Publishing penned by pseudo writer Beau Ang.

“Many forget about the real reason why we need healing—it’s because we got hurt, got angry, got sad, and questioned ourselves. This book gave me the freedom to be angry and to accept my pain,” shared the “Banana Sundae” star in the book’s foreword.
Laid out in colorful pages of “Para Kay Ex” are hilarious sentiments, jokes, and activities relating to the pains of dealing with an ex-best friend, an ex-boss, an ex-lover or someone who was never yours in the first place.
Aside from sharing her views, The “Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes” actress also served as the book’s featured celebrity with must-see photos of her acting out the many “hugot” lines written on the pages.
Beau Ang’s must-grab manual allows readers to mourn, express their bitterness, and cope up with heartaches through activities with funny twists. The witty author also believes that sometimes, the worst place you can be is in your own head.
She wrote, “it’s also to exercise your brain, which hibernated ever since you fell in love. This is the activity book that will hook on your confused emotions, and drown you with the reality that you are not really together. He might have played you before, but who’s playing now?”
“Para Kay Ex” is exclusively available in all National Bookstore outlets nationwide at P195.

DIRECTOR DISCUSSES BRINGING “TOMB RAIDER” BACK TO THE SCREEN

Roar Uthaug, the Norwegian filmmaker who balanced intimate character work with enormous action set pieces in the Scandinavian films The Wave and Escape” now directs “Tomb Raider,” the story that will set a young and resolute Lara Croft on a path toward becoming a global hero.

“This is a more down-to-earth Lara Croft than we’ve seen before on film, which appealed to me,” he says.  Get a load of the director’s thoughts about “Tomb Raider” in the following interview.

Question:  What was your overall vision for the film and the character of Lara Croft?

Roar Uthaug:  We’re doing a gritty and authentic take on Tomb Raider and creating a Lara who’s a badass but is also vulnerable and imperfect.  That makes her very relatable.

As a gamer and fan of the Tomb Raider game, I really enjoyed directing the film, and it was a real pleasure working with Alicia Vikander.  At the same time, I’m very humbled by the responsibility of creating a new version of such an iconic character.

Q:  What qualities does Alicia bring to the reinvention of the character that the two of you created together?

Uthaug:  Alicia is special and dedicated to her craft.  She worked incredibly hard on all her physical training and preparation with the stunt team.  As an actress Alicia has such a presence and authenticity, which give her scenes a grounded feeling and an emotional connection that we’re not used to experiencing in a movie like this.  Of course, we have the big scope and scale and action you’d expect, but there’s an engaging character – Alicia’s Lara – at the film’s core.

Q:  How do you create the balance between the intimate character work and the vast scale of the production?

Uthaug:  The spectacle doesn’t work if you don’t care about the character.  So, first you must create a character that the audience will root for.  When you have that, the audience becomes engaged. They can really experience everything that’s happening to that character.

Q:  Where is Lara when we meet her in the film?

Uthaug When we meet Lara, she’s a bike courier in East London, trying to make ends meet.  Her father, Richard, had disappeared seven years earlier, which has taken an emotional toll on Lara.  She’s been pushing that part of her life away, not wanting to be a part of the Croft legacy because that would mean accepting that he’s gone.  To stop a downward spiral, she begins to pull at the threads of what’s happened to him.  Lara discovers that there was a lot more to Richard than what she knew, which propels her on her journey.

Q:  What does Dominic West bring to the character of Lara’s father, Richard Croft?  Same question for Daniel Wu as Lu Ren, and Walton Goggins as Mathias.

Uthaug:  Dominic brings a warmth to the character, who is torn between what he feels he must do and the love for his daughter.  Dominic portrays that in a very emotional, charming way.

Daniel created this strong but down-and-out Hong Kong fisherman who captains a rusty boat.  When we meet Lu Ren, he seems kind of carefree, but after we get to know him, we find out that there’s a lot more to him than we initially thought.

Walton is fun and energetic and brings the set alive. He has a great presence in front of the camera, and it makes for a dangerous villain. We discussed creating this villain that’s not a traditional bad guy with a scheme to destroy the world.  Mathias is a man on a mission and he is the hero of his own story.  Mathias has layers, which Walton brought to the character.  He can be very intimidating on screen, although he’s super fun off-screen.

Q:  Did you have a favorite or memorable moment during filming?

Uthaug:  There is a sequence where Lara is hurled down the river and lands in a Japanese World War II bomber.  We shot part of that sequence in a whitewater rafting facility outside London.  I remember holding my breath as Alicia, whose hands were literally tied, was going down those rapids.  Her dedication really paid off in that scene, and in so many others.

Q:  What do you hope audiences experience when they see “Tomb Raider” in the cinema?

UthaugThis is a standalone movie – an origin story about Lara Croft.  We made it for everyone; you don’t need to know the game to enjoy it.  Audiences will love the large-scale action, which unfolds in an authentic way. There’s a powerful humanity at the heart of the film.

Having said that, fans of the game will enjoy seeing some special ‘Easter eggs’ we’ve placed throughout the film.

In Philippine cinemas Thursday, March 08Tomb Raider is distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
